Critical Lens Essay
“In a dark time, the eye begins to see.” This quote is true because when things get tough, it forces you to see things differently. When faced with adversity, you must come out of your comfort zone and open your eyes to what is going on. Two examples of this in the book, Deliverance, would be when they found Drew dead, with his eyes wide open, and the overall transformation for Ed throughout the novel. Both Drew and Ed were in the dark at points in this novel, and were ultimately forced to see.
When Drew was finally discovered after being shot and falling out of the canoe, his eyes were open. This was very symbolic of the type of person Drew was and what lesson he was taught. Drew was the type of person that obeyed civil laws, not natural laws. He didn’t want to listen to Lewis when he wanted to report the dead body to the police. He didn’t understand that they were on their own, and that the civil law wasn’t going to protect them now. They needed to work off of instinct and Drew didn’t comprehend that. Two literary terms that were used to display this were foreshadowing and plot. The foreshadowing of this was that Drew was blinded by the truth and somehow he needed to be shown that in certain times, he should open his eyes and try to see different perspectives. The plot is that everyone learned something in this novel. Drew learned to see that he was wrong with his judgment of law, and that he should have listened to Lewis.
Throughout the whole novel, Ed grew as a person. He started out as a boring, dull, day-to-day kind of guy that couldn’t care less one way or the other. During the book though, he undertakes experiences that help him come to realize what life is all about. While he is in the woods, he learns how to become alive again. He was blinded by what he couldn’t see, the excitement to life. His eyes were opened while he was in the woods, and he needed to take care of everyone and get them out of the woods safely. Two literary devices that support this are plot and symbolism. The plot was that everyone grew as a person. In Ed’s case, he grew as a man. He began to actually live and appreciate life. He lived in the moment, not just trying to get through each day. The symbolism here is that his eyes were “opened” to what was going on around him. He vwas no longer Ed, the guy who barely had any excitement in his life; he was Ed, the man that realized his importance in the world.
Both Drew and Ed, in adversity, were forced to see through their handicap. Drew thought he knew everything, and knew how to handle every situation. But in this occasion, he wasn’t right and he paid for it. Ed grew from being blinded to finally seeing the true meaning of life. His eyes were opened to reality and took charge of his life. The book Deliverance is a very symbolic book, and it portrays its main point of finally being able to see excellently.
