Interview and photos by Justin Kosman
1. What was your first experience with BMX?
I think when I was around eight years old I would ride these little dirt jumps near my house.
2. What was your first bike setup and how has it changed?
Well, the first bike I can remember getting serious on was an S&M Challenger with 990s. It was actually kind of trail-style, but then things got ugly and I got more of a trick-hucker short bike with pegs, Gyro, and triple-wall rims. Now I’m back to more of a trail/skatepark setup. I still wish I could get a longer frame, though.
3. What other projects do you have outside of BMX?
I had a band going called "Magnum." We were real down with playing as much as possible, but then things kind of slowed down. Rich and I are working on a new project; we’re just making songs and practicing recording and stuff like that.
4. When was the last time you saw a hot move and said, “Holy Crap”?
Hmm… Maybe watching those Elevation dirt comps. Anything Mike Aitken does; Josh Harrington has got some shit down, too. Every time I ride with Brett Walker—we were doing these demos in Calgary and he did a double-whip across this big channel.
5. How many racecars do you have?
I have a 10th scale and a 8th scale. I just recently got the 8th scale. It’s one of the funnest things. It’s just like racing real cars but cheaper. There’s a pretty big scene down here for ‘em. I mean, shoot, Brett has got one, so does Dan, Nate, Jordan, Emmers, and I heard that some Aussies got ‘em, too.
6. How many real cars do you have?
I have two, one is a 2004 Dodge SRT-4. It’s not exactly my dream car but it’s fun. It’s getting pretty good right now; I’ve been having a lot of fun taking it out to track events. I also have a 1981 Porsche 924 Turbo that I planned on making like the old Le Manns 924, but I realized that right now I cant afford to do that. So it will just sit until I pay off my SRT, and then I'll start on it.
7. What's your body art gallery include?
My tattoos are pretty silly. I have Bender (“Futurama” character) on my arm and I also have a cartoon city around my wrist. Then I have a guitar with a rising sun type thing in it—that’s all on my left arm. As for my right arm I just have BMX tattooed on my wrist. I would love to get as many tattoos as possible. I think they’re awesome because you can have anything like a funny tat or like an artsy tat and it’s all fun.
8. What motivates you to do new things on your bike?
Well I do bike shows as a daily job and we do the routine every day. It really makes me want to get to a skatepark and work on new stuff, although I’m so bored of all the spots by me.
9. Describe your perfect day.
Wake up around nine and drink some water. It would be like 60-degrees outside. Play guitar for maybe two hours, check all the Internet stuff, burn a few tanks in my RC car, call Chris, MCA, and Nate and we could go ride until we no longer have a desire to ride. Then go have dinner with Caryn, maybe some Mexican food. Then go hang out with Ziggy and get ready for bed.
10. What riders originally influenced you and who is it nowadays?
Guys like Ruben ,Taj, and Joe Rich were first, and nowadays it’s guys like Mike Aitken, Corey Bohan, and Brett Walker
11. When was the last time you were scared?
I was about to hit this channel, like from and eight-foot quarter to a big tranny bank. It was about a 15-foot gap, and right as I was about to go off the lip I noticed there was jib boom camera thing right in the way, so I jumped off and my body barely cleared the gap. I was pretty mad. I almost had to attack the camera guy. I gave him a piece of my mind.
12. What was the last thing you spent more than a hundred dollars on?
I think it was my 8th scale; did I mention it’s a BMW M3 GTR?
13. What's one of your vices?
I eat way too much string cheese. We get this one brand that’s so amazing—I can eat the whole bag in one sitting.
14. What is a recipe for a bad day?
Drinking all night and then expecting to ride the next day.
15. What is a recipe for a good day?
Getting paid and getting laid.
16. What is a recipe for a good lunch?
Meeting up with a good friend and then going to Chipotle or Green Burrito. Eating tons while making sure that you got a good amount of sour cream and enough salsa to last for all your chips. And don't forget to take advantage of free refills!
17. What other riders impress you?
Brett Walker, that guy bought white jeans to ride in and he’s been growing a mustache for like eight weeks. I really think Scott Malyon is a badass; I've never really met him but I love his riding style. Oh yeah, Rob Sigaty—you owe me a new shirt.
18. What's your favorite outfit from head to toe?
I usually prefer T-shirts. I really like this Fender shirt I have with a Telecaster body on the whole front. I mostly just find one pair of jeans that I really like the way they fit. Right now it’s these Diesel "Levan" jeans. As for shoes I'll wear Etnies or DVS.
19. What's the best post-riding activity?
I love just playing guitar whenever I get a chance. There’s so much to learn, and I have a great amp and few guitars that I really like.
20. If you could grow a garden with anything in it, what would you have sprouting in your backyard?
Probably something typical, like a money tree so I could start working on opening my own RC racetrack. Touring car only, none of that off-road-bro stuff. It would have a great, clean surface with a large variety of turns/elevation changes, tight shicanes and long, fast straights. The track would really take a talented driver.
21. Do you know what it takes?
Having a good time, trying to be nice to others. Knowing what is right for yourself. Lots of RC tuning—I mean, if you’ve got the wrong amount of camber combined with the wrong spring rate you’re going to have no grip! Then you’re really just wasting tires, looking like a fool, possibly getting over-steer/under-steer, and straight up wasting fuel.
