Yet another filming trip for the up coming Brian Purdy video, “F this S.” This time it was Adam Banton, Anthony Cico, Allan Cooke, and Rob Wise. We flew to the Hawaiian island of Oahu for just over a week in search of the many concrete parks and vast street that the island has to offer. There was ideal weather, perfect beaches, and the warm, crystal-clear water wasn’t a bad reason to road trip either. Cico had already been on the island living in a van for almost a month when we arrived. He had a killer tan and hooked up with some really cool locals that showed us all the spots.
Because of the time being six hours earlier than the East Coast we were riding by about eleven o’clock everyday, which left plenty of time to enjoy all that the island had to offer; on and off bikes. We made multiple trips to a few different parks and even though they were not bike-friendly, the skaters were cool about letting us film and ride the parks. The street spots were pretty spread out, which lead to a lot of pedaling around—but we were in Hawaii. Just when we would be getting tired it seemed like our guide Cuyler always had another spot he was leading us to. We would usually end the day with a sunset swim in the ocean and then BBQ at Mike “Big Island” Castillo’s house or Brian’s ski-bum buddy, Kenny, who was nice enough to cook us food, let us stay at his house, use his surfboards, and drink for free at his bar. Not a bad guy at all.
We rode, surfed, got kicked out of street spots by bums, did flatland onstage at a strip club, got poison oak, and one of us even got our back shaved by the ex-Miss Honolulu at a skatepark. It will all be in the video, don’t worry—it’s just as ridiculous as it sounds.
