Interview and photos by Kevin Conners

A few months back, word got out that Kelly Bolton had learned fakie-front-flips, and a few videos popped up to provide confirmation. Well, Kelly was at the Incline Club last night on a Staff road trip, and Kevin Conners got a great sequence of the trick, plus an interview with Kelly about how it came about. Obviously you have done one or two of these before. What is the deal? Why would you even want to do a fakie-front-flip?
I had a dream about it—no lie. Since I had been playing around on a freecoaster for a little while, I figured that I would go for one since you are already halfway around at the top of the tranny.

But it is totally retarded. I mean, didn’t you take it a million times trying or did you just stick it and that was it?
The first time I did it was actually on concrete, so I just committed. It took me probably 20 actual times before getting it done.

You just went on a trip with Scotty Cranmer—you guys even discussed freecoasters. Obviously you heard the rumors that he just bought a freecoaster and had some stuff in mind to play with. Was that motivation to pull one at his park [Incline Club] before heading home?

I think Scotty and I get along really well. People kept mentioning that Scotty might get jealous, but I know Scotty's not really like that, and I would love to teach anyone how to do that trick. I would rather see progression, not de-gression. On a side-note, Scotty and I rode today and I’m pretty sure he’s ready.

So in the fakie-front-flip in this picture you are chainless—what’s up with that?
My freecoaster blew up before the trip. I’ve been practicing doing it with a chain but it’s just not there yet, so I had to settle for chainless.

What’s next? Are we going to see you blasting these out of quarters or are you done with it?
I would really like to boost them out of quarters, so that’s the next step for me. Hopefully I will get it to that point soon. I do have a few other fakie tricks in the works...
