The Life of a BMX Filmer

Text: Losey
In a recent poll, we asked what would be the most fun BMX job to have, and Photographer/Filmer won by a landslide. Getting to travel, see and ride incredible spots, and documenting some of the best riding in BMX is pretty amazing—I’ve been lucky enough to be in that position for over 15 years, and I have no complaints. You get the perks of being a pro even if you can’t ride like one.
Since so many people are interested in a BMX job behind a camera, we decided to give you some insight into what it’s really like. We will bringing you a photographer version of this story soon, but for now we have two interviews with two videographers who make their living filming 20” bikes. One is Dave Mavro, who works for Fuel TV and is responsible for a lot of the BMX you see on the boob tube. The other is Chad Shackelford, who produces the “Shook” videos and works on countless other projects at all times. Read what these guys have to say and make sure to watch the samples of their work. If you’re looking to learn more about video or photography, make sure to check out the Photo/Video Message Board here on the Vital BMX Forums.
