I predict these will be a thing some day, like 29er mtbs.

2/8/2012 8:34 PM

someone had one at a trails jam once, pretty much like a 20" but more stable and easier to throw around than a 24"

I personally think it's a dumb idea to introduce another rim size into bmx, S&M's just trying to be innovative & it will probably catch on, but just like how Fit's doing the 24mm spindle with their cranks now, I think it's dumb, there's 19mm & 22mm as the standard spindle size, & 20" as the standard rim size, I think that's enough IMO.

This isn't a new idea at all. 22 inch rims/bmx bikes were done in the early 1980's but never caught on for whatever reason. Actually, kids bmx bikes (real race bikes for small children) have rims that are really close to this size.

tire sizes on bikes go up in two inch increments starting at like 8 inches. 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, ???, 24, 26....

in 2009 or so a couple of guys from England started a company called Faction that only makes 22 inch bmx bikes but they've been very slow getting parts out. Standard has made a few custom 22 inch frames as well as Stout bikes out of texas. There are tires available from england and some guys from texas bought some custom 22 inch rims and have them available.

The pictures on PlussizeBmx are mine. That is a prototype that S&M shipped up for some of us to test out. It's got custom rims that S&M had made and as the article says, . The geometry on this thing feels great.

It may not be for everyone but those that are stoked on it will probably enjoy it.

Who's bike was it or what frame was it, do you remember?

If it was the Faction frame, that thing sucks. The bottom bracket is pretty low and the back end is WAY too long so it rides like a bit like a slug.

i dont see the point, 20 if you want something to throw around, 24 if you want stability. Doesnt seem necessary to me.

If you were a woman Id bash your skull =)

2/9/2012 5:01 PM

because it's the best of both worlds?

I have a SICK 24. LIquid frame with really high quality parts. I also have a really nice 20 inch. They ride nothing like each other. The 22 from S&M rides just like my 20 inch. But it's just a TAD bit more forgiving. Keep in mind, I'm probably old enough to be your dad. My knees are hurting, I've had back surgery, sprained every joint and tendon on my body, etc but I STILL WANNA RIDE!

I also ride big trails, most of the time. If I rode park/street, I would stick w/ a 20.

I've been mentioning 22" wheels to Sunday everytime I see Jim C on his Wave C/Model C. I asked Jim about 22s when he did a Pro Q&A a few months back. His answer was not encouraging. I asked him, "What does the future hold for 22" wheel bmx bikes?"

He replied, "I'm not sure about this one. 22" is so close to 24" and 20" that it might be difficult to get people to switch. I'd say that you would need some sort of way to make the wheel stuff available. Right now there isn't good tires or rims for it. These are very expensive to make especially since the demand is very small compared to everything else. It would be interesting to try one out, but like I said the rims and tires are the hard part."

S&M, the door is wide open for you to take the reins on this. It is obvious now that the rims and tires are not the issue. What is the issue is the willingness of big brands such as S&M and Sunday to get the ball rolling. If a small ass company (and I do mean SMALL) like Faction can get rims and tires, you damn well know Sunday can. Or is all their stuff a bunch a junk pulled out of the Taiwan catalog? We know it's not.

in a few years these things will be normal and tires/rims will be available from many companies. I'll bet Odyssey is one of them. These bikes will be just another option for people to buy.......

2/10/2012 2:46 AM

aren't smaller wheels stronger? why not make a 22" tt with higher bb height, and taller fork legs?

I put my spoke in her while I twisted her nipple.

That's like saying lets take this 18" bmx put 20" bmx forks and a 20" frame but keep the wheels it would be all out of poportion

Will it? Because it's been in discussion for about a decade, and several prototype bikes have been made. I can find 22" bikes from like 2007. They still haven't caught on.

Sometimes things take a while to gain momentum. I think this size bike is one of those things. This size tire was introduced to bmx in the early 1980's but didn't catch on then either.

I think many people have been interested in them but with no legitimate companies stepping up to make wheels/tires and Faction being EXTREMELY slow with getting their parts made and available, riders haven't had the opportunity to test ride a bike. If you check out S&M's facebook page where they link to the plussizedbmx.com article, you will see that many people are excited about this. I'm actually surprised at the positive responses.

Who knows, I could be wrong. This might flop. But, I hope it doesn't and do believe that it won't. Only time will tell.

It's like I said above. There needs to be a "willingness" from major brands. S&M/Fit just might be the company to do it. And I hope they are successful. I know I'd buy one.

I would buy one today. So, pnj, how much do you want for yours?
