Birthday Boy Beginner Bike

7/17/2012 11:56 AM

Okay so my nephew's birthday is coming up and I'm looking to get him a complete. Basically going to drag him around all summer.

Budget: $550 and under.

Height: 6'3
Weight: 140
Riding Level: Beginner

60%Street. 30%Dirt. 10%Park.

Looking at:

2013 United KL40 Expert- Trans Red/Tan
Reasons:
-13.75" Chainstay should be comfortable enough for dirt.
-Colorway is awesome

Any other suggestions?

@Garett_Kanters: I thought you would have mentioned this.

@Mr.Buck Nasty: The dudes a twig. He just snapped both his wrist this past weekend racing his motorcycle.

@Brokenbmx: That's good to know because I haven't seen much talk about them since I've been to this website.

@BmxNinja101: I looked at the Kink line up and liked the 2013 Kink Whip but I don't know if the geometry would fit his body. Do you think a 20.5" Toptube is too short for someone his height?

From the Subrosa line I was looking at the 2013 Subrosa Arum XL.

7/18/2012 11:06 AM

I would say 20.5" is too small for someone over 6 foot. Stick with 21's.

the amber phero is full chromoly...

I have nothing against pegs at all, I don’t think you’re dumb if you ride pegs, I don’t care about your pegs, they are just pegs! What I do hate is the fact that every person in BMX hops on this bandwagon of three pegs, and beanies, and weed, and hop-over grinds… It’s just sad that the pros who influence kids are more worried about looking cool than the kids themselves! It’s crazy!-Trey Jones

7/19/2012 12:33 AM

Should I even consider this... He's one of those brand name kids and Specialized just recently took over the MX scene.

Specialized P.20

Bump, I'd like some input please.

7/19/2012 12:34 PM

AMBER PHERO IS A BETTER DEAL. ITS ALL AFTER MARKET. ITS EVEN GOT TWOMBOLTS AND A RACHET! The United is nice don't get me wrong, but the phero is better for the price.

United is a popular brand with an amazing team which includes Nathan Williams,Corey Martinez, and Christian Rigal. All of them are top notch riders.

There products are high quality and aren't made cheap. You can expect it to last quit a bit for a stock bike. As for aftermarket parts, they have the basics ; tires, pedals, grips, etc as you move up to top end completes. If your looking for the most amount of custom parts, this isn't your bike, but since your nephew is a beginner he won't need them. As he progresses he can upgrade when he starts to break stuff, but just cause it's stock doesn't mean it's bad.

In all,you get a high quality beginner bike for a good price and that's gonna make him stoked to ride. It's got a pivotol seat, nice topload stem, and 3 piece cranks. If I was him I'd be pysched.

I kind of meant input on the Specialized P.20 I don't get what it says about the rear hub. Is it a freecoaster or cassette hub?

"Low flange, CNCd 9t cog driver, 4x sealed cartridge bearings, hollow 14mm Cr-Mo axle w/ 23mm contact, 17mm axle nuts, 36h."
