I'm trying to figure out what kind of camera i should get. I've been using a gopro 3 black for two years and it's been ok but it stopped working and i want to get a "real" camera now. I was thinking about going all out and getting a VX but i'm not sure if i could really handle learning how to use it and anything that still uses tapes kinda scares me. I don't want to get another gopro or any other action cam type thing. I know a lot of people film with canon t3i and other dslr's. What's so good about filming with those? Aren't they actually for taking pictures? I really don't know what i'm doing, but i want to learn. Would something like this be any good http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-HC-V770-Camcorder-Wireless-Smartphone/dp/B00RBG5J02/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top?ie=UTF8

He convinced me to buy a VX.

For being my first real camera, it's been pretty easy to get used to. Although Steve gave me a full rundown of exactly how to do everything, I still like learning things on my own. So when I first got it I kept all the auto settings on and the stock lens. Recording is as simple as pushing the same button twice. First thing I started playing with was the zoom, which I got pretty good at using. Then I bought a fisheye and began playing with the focus and other settings. Everything so far has been pretty easy if not self explanatory. It has been and still is a great learning experience. Now I'm on the fence about either getting a couple more or just upgrading to something slightly fancier, but for now I'm still 100% satisfied with my VX.

Also, I paid roughly $300 for my VX and $150 for my lens on eBay.

I can't really recommend VX1000's anymore because they're just not easily repairable or reliable. Hell, even beagle the skate filmer who was one of the last to jump ship switched to HD a year or two back. It's just too much hassle to find a clean one and otherwise you need to send it in to get cleaned up for a hundred bucks. If you want a camcorder like a VX but HD get an hvx200a or hmc40.

What kind do you have? I've been looking at 2100's and i would go for it but i am not sure how i would put the clips on a computer. I know you capture through a firewire but i don't have a firewire port on my computer. Is there like a converter to usb i could use or something?

All you have to do is unscrew the panel on your case which just slides off and plug it in. Takes 30sec

I don't film a lot, I mostly take non-BMX pictures, but I know a little about cameras.

Knowing your budget helps but I'll assume you're not trying to spend more than about $1000.

First and foremost, DSLRs make good video cameras because of the sensor size and availability of affordable lenses. A larger sensor let's to take pictures/film in lower light without it looking like shit.

The Canon Txi series is pretty good and affordable. I think the newest is the T6i, but really anything T3i and newer will be pretty nice. They have rotating and pivoting LCDs, which help a ton. You'll want one of those horseshoe like handles, but those are pretty cheap.

Also, the kit lens is OK, but something like a Rokinon 14mm f2.8 would be nicer, and they are cheap. That lens is full manual (focus and aperture), but it's pretty easy to figure out, and at that focal length, just set the focus to 1 meter and leave it. As long as you don't open the aperture wide open, almost everything will be in focus.

A Sony a6000 or a5100 has the same sensor size in a lot smaller camera. I almost impulse bought one of these last year just because they are fucking sick. The auto focus is really good. The cool thing about mirrorless cameras is the flange to sensor distance is really small, so you can adapt pretty much any lens in the world to it if you are cool with manual focus, and a lot of autofocus lenses will still work if you buy a nice adaptor.

Both those cameras are like $500-700 with a kit lens. If you get into taking pictures, both are really good for that too.

There are other mirrorless cameras that are also pretty good, I just don't really keep up with them too much. Most of them have smaller micro 4/3 sensors. Also the entry level Nikon's might be OK, but I have way too many Canon lenses to even think about switching. I don't even read about Nikon shit because if something way better comes out, I don't want to know it.

If you get serious into photography (stills) you'll eventually want a full frame sized sensor, but the cheapest full frame camera I know of that's worth a shit for video is a 5Dmk3, and that's like $2300 body only. I have a 6D, but it's pretty shitty for video. I think the first generation Sony A7s might be getting affordable, and it's really good for video, but not good enough at pictures to make me interested.

TL;DR: Canon Txi, or Sony APS-C mirrorless.

Don't invest in either of those. Canon dslr's have garbage video compared to anything in the price range. The Sony apsc don't have mic jacks except for the one that's supposed to come out. Panasonics represent the best image quality for under a g at this point in time.

They're good to learn on
I miss mine even though my hmc150 and gh2 are technically better. Vx's are less stressful to use and just fun. It lets you focus more on the filming because of the 4:3 framing and less on trying not to chop heads. New tech isn't always better. People buy vx's for nostalgia, not as much performance. You don't buy a 1965 mustang for the performance, you buy it for the wow factor

If you get an apple laptop you just need a cable adapter. If it's a pc laptop you might be out of luck because most laptops don't have pc Mia slots anymore. Desktops are different, you can just get a pcie express card

Yo dude, I'm looking into getting a smaller camera to set up on a tripod for second angles. Something small and easy to set up, with a decent zoom. Looking at a few things but figured I'd see if you had anything to recommend.

Trv 950
Same sensor as the vx2000 or 2100 but in a smaller body. That's what bob scerbo used for a lot of stuff iirc

The entire point of the thread was that he didn't know what he wanted and needed help figuring out his options

Yeah, thanks for the info man. I'm thinking about getting this just because it would be so much more convenient. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sony-NEX-VG10-14-2mp-Interchangeable-Lens-HD-Camcorder-with-Lens-/121906442384?hash=item1c6230b090:g:LZUAAOSwFNZW0GjC

Those kinda suck. They don't have power zoom lenses like most camcorders but don't have the picture capabilities and portability of an interchangeable lens dslr or mirror less. Honestly you should just pick up a vx2100 and an opteka titanium fisheye and go from there.

I was reading some skate forums and they were saying if you can't get a firewire port to use a pinnacle moviebox. That would probably be my only option if i get a vx. Do you know if those work well or if they cut the quality?

if there is any it should be imperceptible. If you want something HD though that's a whole different ballgame
