Hubguards. Who needs them? Spokes are cheap. I used to ride them until I realized their uselessness. They simply hinder me from doing dropout grinds by giving less area to drop onto a ledge.

Guess I am confused as to why a piece of metal from the company he bought the hubs from whos guard is designed specifically for said hub isn't good enough, yet some other companies piece of metal would be better.

Hub guards do much more than protect your spokes & make your hub look pretty, think about it.. Without a hub guard, you're slamming down on your hub right where the bearing sits usually. Overtime all that force is gonna take its toll on the bearing & kill it, then you're replacing a bearing & spokes from time to time

Like I said, maybe he wants more options. I have the BSD front/Cult rear. Does that mean I have to buy the specific guards to them the company makes because clearly that is the ideal choice?

No. It means they make a guard for their hubs for other reasons like so you can support their company, or so you can get a hub guard that will 100% fit the hub. That doesn't mean another guard out there won't be better though, or maybe have a better design. For instance, the Cult Match guard fits the Cult Match hub perfectly, but seizes to the axle very quickly due to its design. The Knight hub guard also fits it perfectly, and doesn't seize. Therefore that would be a better choice.

Personally I can see why he dosent want the odyssey guards. i had 2 of the vandero 2 guards made by odyssey and they where by far the most disappointing odyssey product i have ever ridden. They barley protected the spokes and after one session they where already bent and rubbing the spokes. On top of all that they where wider then the stock cones so they pushed bearing in making the hub spin like shit.

More expensive, more specific, if you change your hub you will have to buy another ones.

I agree with you when I go pegless I don't like having hub guards cause I can't grind with them but with pegs its just better to have hub guards I barely put them on and you do feel a difference on rails
