This is not the typical news you see here on Vital BMX, but it's one of the coolest e-mails we've ever gotten. Check it out, and great job to Jeff Crowell and all of the companies involved.
My name is Jeff Crowell and my wife and I own and operate a small BMX only bike shop in Lapeer, Mi called Street, Dirt & Vert. I wanted to pass on this awesome story about some of the companies involved with BMX and how incredibly giving they are.
About six months ago I was contacted by the Make a Wish Foundation about building a bike for a local kid who has Leukemia. I immediately said yes to the project and was told they would be in contact with me. After that I met the kid and his mother at the shop. Since our meeting he has been in and out of the hospital several times with many complications and other illnesses due to his weak immune system. Unfortunately due to the overwhelming number of sick kids in our area he keeps falling back on the list for his bike. Then about 4 weeks ago I ran into him and his mother at Wal-Mart and I found out he had slipped down the list again and had recently gotten out of the hospital with a near fatal case of Chicken Pox of all things.
After seeing him in such poor spirits I wanted to cheer him up so I decided to call around to some of the bike companies I deal with just to see if maybe I could get the guy a few shirts and stickers just to cheer him up a bit and what happened next I still don’t believe.
I started out by contacting Mike Corley at Eastern who is an old friend and riding buddy from back in the 80’s. After telling him about the kids story I was shocked when Mike offered up a brand new Ace of Spades complete bike. I was even more shocked when I started calling up more companies for some swag and things for the kid just got even better. Here is a list of what has been donated for this fellow rider so far
Eastern Bikes= Ace of Spades complete (Mike Corley)
Kink Bikes= 5 shirts, 4 DVDs and tons of stickers (Chris)
Animal= 9 shirts, stem, bar ends, DVDs and more stickers (All of the guys)
System cycle/DK= 4 shirts, DK jersey, DVDs (Jerry)
Odyssey= 4 shirts, Tires, seat, EVO II brake set, Mono lever and linear cable (Jim Bauer)
Sunday= Morning II forks (Jim)
S&M=Small Slam Bars and a DVD (Sean McKinney)
As you can see from the pics the bike turned out awesome and the kid was totally stoked. After finding out about what we were doing, the MAKE A WISH FOUNDATION offered up a free trip for him to Woodward this summer and the local indoor skatepark donated a free year membership.
