Even though he placed second in the BMX dirt contest at the last Dew Tour stop, Cam White didn't leave healthy. Cam went down hard on a 360 double tailwhip on his third run and has been off his bike since. Vital BMX recently asked Cam a few questions to figure out what's up.
1. How did you manage to get injured at the Dew Tour and still get second place?
Well, with this new format where they take two out of three runs, you’re able to stuff up a run. I was just lucky my first two runs worked out.
2. What is the injury that you're dealing with?
It’s nothing really major, just one of those nagging injuries that is more annoying than anything. I bruised the bones in my wrist, hand, and fingers. I don’t really care about the pain; if I can hold onto the bars I’m set to go. The worst part is that my grip is really weak. I couldn’t even hold my toothbrush until just a week ago.
3. Have you been to the doctor? How long did they tell you to stay off the bike for?
Yeah, I went to the hospital in Baltimore the day after I did it. I just wanted to make sure there were no broken bones or anything major going on in there. It’s hard to tell when there is a lot of swelling and no strength in your hand. I thought something was broken for sure. The doctor told me I would be riding in ten days, so I should have been back on my bike two weeks ago....
4. This injury caused you to miss Red Bull Elevation. How did you feel about that?
I was so bummed. I lost a lot of sleep over a lot of nights thinking about that contest and I’m still not over the fact that I missed it. I know it’s time to let it go, but every dirt jumper knows Elevation is the best contest ever. I’m over the fact I missed it, I just can’t wait to ride my bike again.
5. Have you been back on your bike at all yet?
I went to Woodward West last weekend to see how it would go and get back into it, but I only lasted like six minutes before my hand got weak and swelled up. I pretty much haven’t touched my bike since I crashed, only to ride to the shops and back.
6. Are you going to ride the Cleveland Dew Tour?
Yeah, I’m just going to rock up a day of practice and drop in cold turkey. It sucks that it will be cold turkey, but hey, if I’m riding my bike in general, I’m stoked. It’s all good.
7. Do you think you will be back at 100% at the Dew Tour?
I really hope so, but I don’t think I will be 100%. I don’t know many riders who are at 100%; we all have our little injuries that just tag along and follow us like our shadow. All I need to do is hold onto my bars and it’s all good, hahaha.
8. What have you been doing to pass the time since you've been injured?
Hmm.... watching three seasons of South Park, Family Guy, and American Dad, probably over twenty movies, and eaten a lot of popcorn. I went digging at Lavin’s yard two days ago; it has never felt better to be outside in the 110 degree Vegas heat digging dirt jumps! I’m just glad to get off the couch and go do something. I’ve also been running around the block everyday to keep up a bit of exercise.
