Craig Mast Injury Interview

 Craig Mast Dew Tour Orlando
Craig Mast recently took a slam that resulted in a busted ankle. Craig is a badass, so you know he was doing something good when he got hurt. We hit him up to get the details for Vital BMX.

Where were you riding and what were you doing when you got hurt? Was it all because of a pedal?
I was at The Flow skatepark when I got hurt. I got hurt because I got the bright idea to 360-triple-whip the five-foot box. It sounded like a good idea at the time. I don’t think I could go as far as to say it was all because of the pedal, but I’ll definitely make sure I have some type of grip next time… Because I had such bald pedals, my left foot slipped right off. I stepped down and snapped my ankle in two. Not Stoked!

Have you pulled that trick before?
I’ve done it on a resi but never acually pulled it clean. It just doesn’t seem that wild in my head. I think if I had something bigger the results would be a bit better.

If there is any such thing as a good time to get hurt, is this it?
Well, getting hurt sucks no doubt, but I guess I’m somewhat glad it happened now. There’s not a whole lot coming up anytime soon, and it just got too cold to function anyway. So, I’ll enjoy my endless nights of Guitar Hero.

How long will this keep you off your bike?
The doctor never really gave me a real estimate of how long this will keep me out. He told me that if it affects the blood flow to the bone then that bone will die, causing me endless surgeries and the loss of movement in my foot. But I don’t really think it’s that bad. I’m saying six weeks [laughs].

What are you doing to pass the time when you would normally be riding?
Right before I got hurt my mom called to tell me she had just won Guitar Hero 3 at a cancer benefit or something. So, a few hours of Guitar Hero a day is keeping me up. But my girlfriend, Myspace, bike videos, Vital BMX, and fantasizing about riding my bike keeps me pretty occupied.
