DC held its third annual DC Sprint Trails Event this past weekend, June 2 - June 3, in Sanger, Calif., and once again the grassroots-bred dirt BMX racing event was a huge success. A number of pros came out for the event including DC’s Robbie Miranda and Chris Doyle, as well as top racing competitors like Brandon Meadows, Steve Cisar, Tyler Brown, Cris Powell and the now three-time Sprint Trails winner Randy Stumpfhauser. The Sprint Trails Event was held in Stumpfhauser’s backyard, which he has graciously provided as the location for the past three years.
“It was awesome! A great group of pros came out, and the large turnout of spectators really added to the excitement of the event,” said Dwayne Taylor, DC BMX Team Manager. “Sprint Trails gets bigger and better every year, and we really stepped it up this year. With the way we’re going, next year’s event is going to be crazy!”
When it came down to the final race of the day, the general thought amongst the 15 pros and numerous spectators in attendance was Stumpfhauser would repeat his victory. The semifinals got heated for Stumpfhauser when Meadows jumped out early off the roll in, and it looked like he was going to take the upset win. But Meadow’s speed bit him in the final lap when he washed out in the second turn and crashed hard. Stumpfhauser coasted to the win. After that, Stumpfhauser dominated the finals and secured the first place position.
DC conceptualized and developed Sprint Trails as a stress free event for the pros. While most high profile national BMX events include lots of pressure, Sprint Trails is a fun weekend for all riders to come together to race. Even with a casual atmosphere, the competition is stiff as the riders battle it out on the two lane side-by-side technical course. The course featured a vert roll-in and all downhill track which required no pedaling, so riders had to be on point and rely on skill, not muscle, to win.
While the event set-up and the racing format are unique to the BMX world, what really makes the Sprint Trails Event are the pros. Riders from every discipline – freestyle dirt, park, vert, street, racing – come to test themselves in Sanger. With the event being so different from the rest of the racing events out there, Sprint Trails is an even playing field of sorts for the pros to see who’s best.
