Garrett Reynolds Comments On X-Games
Last weekend, X-Games Mexico put on the first ever X-Games street contest. Nate Wessel built a course made up of stairs, ledges, rails, and other sorts of things you would never expect to see on an X-Games course. Some of the best street riders in BMX (Van Homan, Seth Kimbrough, Aaron Ross, etc) were invited out for the contest. Garrett Reynolds, the youngest rider in the contest, ended up walking away with the gold and Vital BMX recently caught up with him to see what he thought of the contest.

What do you think of the idea of having a street event in the X Games?
I think it’s awesome to have a contest that is completely different than anything else out there and I’m sure if the street X-Games stays around, you will be seeing way more ridiculous street stuff. It’s awesome because off of the street guys are so laid back with the contest atmosphere. The jam format is the best thing; it was so fun to ride everything and try whatever you wanted, It was sick, it reminded me of the Metro Jam best trick rail contest.
What did you think of the course? How did it compare to "real street?"
The course was super fun, but I wish everything was bigger. A lot of the stuff was small, which is fun, but I think it would be sick to have a rail or a set of stairs that big enough that it would be crazy to do anything on. Nate Wessel had some sick ideas he was telling me about, but there just wasn’t enough room at the place they had the contest.
How did X-Games Mexico compare to the US X-Games?
It was pretty much the same thing, only instead of having Dave Mirra and Ryan Nyquist, we had Van Homan and Aaron Ross. It was awesome.
Were you surprised at your win?
Hahaha, I guess. I look up to pretty much every rider in the contest so the win was a huge surprise. I was psyched, everyone killed it, especially Van. He owned the last heat.
What were some of the highlights of the trip?
The best thing about the trip was going out with Josh Harrington to the club. Hahaha, I don’t get to do that much in the US, but it was crazy fun and something I’ll probably never forget.
What did you think of Mexico? Was this your first trip there?
I was there before when I was like 10 and it was fun, but I would have probably had a better trip if my passport wasn’t stolen. I got stuck there for a little while; it wasn’t too bad though.
Do you have any plans for your money yet?
Put out the Low C Shoe; hahaha, inside joke. I don’t know yet, buy a car probably. I need to get a license first, though.
Do you plan on going to X Games Mexico next year?
I really want to do a 720 down a set of stairs but there was nothing good for it this year. I’ll for sure go have fun again; that’s probably it. Hopefully they invite a bunch of sick riders again.
