The BMX Dirt finals at the Dew Tour in Orlando was a wild ride. Ryan Nyquist went into the event sitting in first place, but he couldn’t just coast away with the title. Cameron White was charging hard, so it was a nail-biter down to the end.
The dirt finals use a best-two-of-three-runs format, which makes consistency key, but there were a lot of crashes that sunk a few riders’ scores. Ryan Guettler qualified in first place with incredible stuff including the first 1080 ever pulled in a dirt contest. Then in the finals, rumors were flying that Guettler was going to throw a double-flip and a 1080 in the same run, but he crashed hard on the double-flip taking him out of the top spots. Cameron White was going balls-out, too, and went for the barspin-to-tailwhip-flip in his last run, but it didn’t work out, which kept him down in sixth.
The top three guys were a treat to watch. Anthony Napolitan rode great and crashed a front-flip-whip over the last set, but he kept going for it and pulled it for himself before he was done. Anthony’s consistency, dialed tricks, and red Levi’s® put him in third. Second place went to Dennis Enarson who was a flip-whip and three-whip machine. First place went to Luke Parslow who was flat-out raging. It’s hard to believe, but this marked Luke’s first major dirt win in America. He’s always been on of the big guns, and he finally got rewarded in Orlando.
At the end of day, Nyquist walked away with the year-end title, followed by Cam White and Dennis Enarson. The 2008 dirt season has been a rollercoaster, and there were quite a few sighs of relief when the event came to a close.
