The Dew Tour vert final was packed with drama every way you looked at it. There were some terrible crashes (Dennis McCoy and Simon Tabron), a tight points race, and one bizarre mechanical breakdown.

Everyone was expecting Bestwick to take the lead on his first run, but when he dropped in and pumped like he was about to do a 12-foot air, the pedal boss on his left crank arm sheared off, which sent him flying out of control. Luckily he landed on the deck, but since he had rolled in to the ramp that counted as his first run.

When the second of two runs came around, things were getting tense. This was Chad Kagy’s first Dew Tour back since getting hurt at the first event of the season, and he was on fire, nailing all of his big tricks and sitting in first place. Simon Tabron was blasting at the start of his second run, but crashed hard on a no-hand-to-barspin-540. Steve McCann was looking like Bestwick-junior blasting huge airs and hard tricks—McCann may be the future of vert.

All eyes were on Bestwick when he rolled in for his last run. He put everything together, and when the score as announced, he had tied with Kagy for first place. To break the tie it came down to each rider’s lowest run score, and Kagy walked away with the final win. This marked Kagy’s first Dew Tour win ever, and with only riding two events for the year, he still paced fourth in overall points.

Bestiwck may have taken second place in the contest, but after having such a dominating year, he amassed enough points to win his third Dew Tour Cup. Congratulations to Jamie and Chad for an incredible event.
