Fixed gears and BMXers have been closer now than ever before. A few BMX companies are even starting to make fixed gear parts. A bunch of the BMX Riders in the Phoenix, AZ area have decided to put on a fixed-gear race. Vital BMX recently asked KC Badger a few questions to figure out what the deal with the Dagger Death Race is.

First off, who are The Daggers and what is the Death Race?
The Daggers are a few BMX kids and a few non-BMX friends who started off riding fixed gears to the bar and recently decided to put on a race. The Death Race is a typical fixed gear alleycat race with some very untypical checkpoints. We’re going to test the strengths and will of fixed gear riders.
How long has this race been in the works and who is in charge of it?
A couple of months; Billy Franevsky does the hard organization work and I found all of the sponsors. All of The Daggers (with some chicks) run the check points and our friend Angel runs the after party.
What can you tell us about the checkpoints without giving too much away?
Cemeteries, death tunnels, bars, ninja star throwing, and the busiest street in Tempe at 11 o’clock on a Saturday night.
What sorts of rumors have been going on around the race?
The first check point is 15 miles away from the start, there’s an hour tattoo time bonus, there are boobie traps on the course; people are actually scared to do the race.
What BMX companies are sponsoring the event?
Volume, Profile, FBM, and Kore Bike Shop. Also God’s Girls, but that’s not really BMX.
What do you think of BMX companies starting to make fixed gear bikes/parts and how do you think that started?
I think it’s cool because every fixed gear kid wants to be a BMX kid and just can’t cut it. A lot of BMX kids also ride fixed gears; it’s kind of a natural evolution to start using bikes for transportation in addition to recreation and BMX bikes aren’t nearly as proficient for transportation as fixed gears.
When is the event taking place and what do riders that want to be involved need to do?
October 27th; bring a bag, a lock, a light, and some balls. We meet at Kore bike shop (2240 N Scottsdale Road in Tempe) at 8:00. Race starts promptly at 9. Also, bring $5. For more information, check us out on The Dagger's myspace page .
