Profile Upgrades Crankset
The classic design of Profile cranks has survived many different trends and phases in BMX with absolutely no change. Today, however, Profile announced the first upgrade to their cranksets in years. Here is the info straight from them:
PROFILE UPGRADES TRIED AND TRUE RACE CRANKSET
(April 24, 2009) St. Petersburg, FL -- Profile Racing, Inc. announced today the first product upgrade in years for their popular Race cranksets & kits. Starting Monday, April 27, the Race crankset and crank kit will come standard with Gun Drilled Hollow axles. The sets & kits will be designated GDH Race Cranksets and pricing will not change. Solid spindles will no longer be available on Profile cranks.
Testing of the new GDH spindles showed comparable durability with the solid chromemoly spindles. The new GDH Race cranksets & kits will therefore continue to have the same Limited Life Time Warranty as the previous solid chromemoly spindles.
The weight savings is substantial. The new GDH version cuts the spindle weight by 28%. The new Crankset (complete) now weighs 2 lbs. 3.7 oz. With the emphasis on lighter BMX and MTB components, Profile Racing is constantly researching and designing lighter parts while maintaining strength. In our development stage we found it is very difficult to drill a deep hole (where the depth is approximately forty-eight times the diameter of the hole) that is both straight and accurately sized with a regular drill. Profile decided to use the manufacturing process used by the firearm industry. The barrel of a gun must be very straight and accurately sized. The gun drill tool was designed to create these long straight holes and is a perfect complement to our hollow spindle manufacturing process.
The MSRP for the new GDH Race crankset is still $149.99 for the crank kit (w/o BB) and $176.98 complete.

taken straight from the story on the history of Profile cranks on Vital Bmx...."Some things have changed by market demand, for instance, bottom brackets have changed in popularity from American to European to Spanish to Mid. Titanium is being used to lighten the weight and now we’re hollowing out the chromemoly spindle for weight and cost savings."

All though , i think they have over looked something, they should cut the splines on one side to a certain length(but i think the machining process won't allow it) , or make a splined top hat sprocket adapter, as thats the biggest cause of a tight spot in a chain, as you put pressure on you cranks , the sprocket and top hat will push against the splines on the axle and cut in , there for putting the spocket out of true, and make it move up and down there for giving you a tight spot and a lose spot... Tree have made a sprocket to solve the problem , hope profile can do something too and it would make all are bikes run smoother .

lol , at spinningbars , you obv have no idea,(Because its CHEAPER to make hollow spindles.....less material=less cost=more profit.) lol , you think they just melt the metal and put it in a mold? they said there is no extra cost, and they have to do more work to it , if anything they aren't making as much money and should really be charging more . And you obv know what your talking about LowKey, spot on mate ! Take note of someone in the know like him!

It looks like a lot of people don't know anything about what or why a process like this is being made. Fist off a hollow spindle can be made stronger than a solid spindle for the simple fact that when you heat treat something like a spindle that is hollow you now have two surfaces that can be strengthened. When you heat treat something the strength of the metal is in the outer most shell or layer of the part, leaving the rest of the metal in a weaker state than non heat treated metal and in a way useless. Also it is not cheaper for profile or any other company to do these kinds of processes. The spindle starts off as a solid bar stock and has to be machined out, tapped for the end bolts, heat treated etc...
I'm sure most of you didn't ride when 14mm axles used to be solid but they used to bend kind of easy compared to all the hubs on the market now that run 14mm hollow axles. The strength is in the heat treating and having more surfaces to take advantage of this process. So its just the evolution of parts and took way to long IMO for profile to catch up with this...

wow.....profile has become a sucker for the weight trend. I've snapped solid profile spindles, so there is no way possible these could be stronger. Profile is doing the same thing that all the rest of the money sucking bmx companies are now doing......pushing product as weight conscious when its actually profit conscious. Why else would they say solid spindles will no longer be available?? Because its CHEAPER to make hollow spindles.....less material=less cost=more profit. I have to say I'm somewhat disappointed. If it was just an upgrade and if the solid spindles were still available, then I would say good move. But with solid spindles being discontinued, Profile's fog and mirrors effect becomes transparent. This move is all about profit.....nothing else.
