TJ Lavin went down hard on a decade around a month ago at the final stop of the Dew Tour in Orlando, Florida. The crash left him with some pretty serious damage to his leg. Vital BMX recently caught up with TJ to see how he's been doing, when he'll be back on his bike, and what he's been doing in his off time.

What bones in your leg did you break?
Compound fractured Tib Fib.
Did you have to get surgery? If so, how was it?
Yeah, so far I’ve had three surgeries. They were all on the same day. Two of them were just to clean the bones and the last one was to put a rod in the tibia. They left the fibula shattered pretty good because the tibia really needs to heal first. They hope the fibula will heal by itself, but we’ll just have to see. Keep your fingers crossed.
What happened when you crashed? Was this your first decade in a while?
I had the best run going that I’ve done in a while and over the last set I overrated a decade a little because I overshot the jump. It was weird because I did a truck to xup on the set before it and landed a little too nice. In practice I did that run and it was a little harder to clear.
How long did the doctors tell you you would be off your bike for?
Four to six months. I think I'll be rolling around the streets in two months and riding the yard in three or four tops.
What have you been doing to keep busy on your down time?
Music, shooting photos of the boys in the backyard, and making Lavs Lab shirts in my garage.
What's new in your music career?
It’s going great. I have a lot of support from all of the boys and it seems to be getting positive feedback, so as long as people are feeling it, I’ll be bangin’ em in the lab.
Are people still riding your backyard even though you’re hurt?
Everyday Nate Berkheimer, Cesar Florez, Mike Gonz, and the ultimate shredder Slayer have been killing it.
What can we expect from you in the next few months?
Probably another album, a lot of new beats, terrible photos that progressively get worse, and a lot of new Lavs Lab shirts.
