The rumors are true—BMX Dirt has been dropped from the X Games. However, BMX Big Air will be added to the regular lineup. Below is the info which came from an ESPN Press Release.
BMX Big Air, which was featured as a pay-per-view event at X Games 12, will now be part of the live network coverage.
After 12 successful years as an X Games event, BMX Dirt will not be in this year’s lineup.
The BMX Big Air competition will feature BMX athletes riding down the Big Air ramp from a 60 or 80-foot roll-in, choosing to launch over a 50 or 70-foot gap, landing and continuing into a 27-foot quarter pipe. BMX superstar Kevin Robinson took the first place at last year’s X Games 12 with a backflip tuck no-hander to no-handed flair.
Mat Hoffman posted this on the Hoffman Sports Association's site in response:
"In response to ESPN’s recent decision to suspend Dirt from the 2007 X Games BMX Freestyle lineup, the Hoffman Sports Association responds with great regret to the loss of the X Games coverage of such a progressive and rooted part of BMX Freestyle.
"H.S.A. holds Dirt to be a vital part of BMX and will continue to seek out new and innovative opportunities for all BMX Freestyle athletes and will focus on bringing other opportunities to Dirt riders."
