Ryan Sher just sent over this preview of something Subrosa is going to be debuting at Interbike. It seems to be some sort of built on bash guard.... your thoughts?
I also think fly's guard is better since you can take it off and it's a lot lighter, but people are killing subrosa faster than you can say "this-is-a-stupid-ass-frame-flybikes-is-better-its-removable" hahaha but flybikes' should have some sort of padding between the guard and the frame. I had a bolt-on guard back in the 90s and it flattened my chainstays! some kind of no-so-hard, not-so-soft plastic pad would help, I guess
I’m an old school fool, so I loved it. But seriously, one day I caught myself thinking: when Haro, GT, bully and every other company released their bashguard frames back in ‘89, ‘90, they were kinda funny looking, they were heavier and all that, but all that was mainly because of those damn 44t sprockets. But now that a 33t is considered huge and the norm is a 25, I say why not?
With today’s frame technology with fluted tubes, 3-million-butted tubes, heat treat this, heat treat that, and holes everywhere, it’s totally possible to make a frame with a small bashguard for, say, 30t or smaller sprockets, without making the bike ride funny due to the extra weight down there. So if this is true, it’s very welcome! I’d rather buy a $10 plastic cover instead of breaking chains and sprockets AND my teeth like once a month! Even those sprockets with CNC built-in guards, the chain is still exposed, and if you're a street destroyer, a 3-inch thick sprocket with guard will eventually bend!
