So u eliminated that a dried up chain ain't the noise. remove the chain and isolate the noise to the crank or rear hub.

first lube up the chain. could just be dried up and making noise. I used a wax base lube found at wal mart. last but 3-4 weeks after that i can hear chain again.

Take the rim or spoke with nipple to a lbs and have them tell you what size you need. No guess work. I had a gsport with odyssey spokes use a black one a gt bike use black and eastern bike use black. I got mine for 7.99 at a lbs after they tested all ... more »

i like my Ratchet. only skipping ones a month or under high high torque (uphill). 20+ more bucks. i'll get the one with the bigger bearings and pawls. the Animal Bearing>bushing.

One other thing it could be is the Pawls skipping on the Hub Ring. Happen to me on a new Eastern stock rim with 6 pawls, caused a lot of popping noise with heavy peddling that echoed all the way up to the cranks, and on random times it'll skip about ... more »
