The handlebars are a critical component when it comes to maintaining control of a BMX bike and its comfort. In today's BMX market there are a countless number of bars to choose from that feature different colors, shapes, sizes, and more. Colony has a line of bars that has something for everyone, but the bars catching the most attention are the signature bars of Anthony Napolitan and Alex Hiam. We decided to take a closer look and learn more about each bar from the pro riders themselves -

Anthony Napolitan

Vital BMX: Favorite feature of your bars and why?

Anthony Napolitan: The Bio Mech bar is my first signature BMX part ever! So, that's definitely one of my favorite things about the bars. Another thing that I absolutely love is the sticker art work. I was lucky enough to convince my tattoo artist Don McDonald into drawing up the sticker design. Don nailed it in the first mock up drawing. Once we had the artwork finalized, I worked with Colony on the color of the sticker and couldn't be happier with the final result.

Vital BMX: What's the reasoning for the chosen dimensions?

Anthony Napolitan: I've had some bad luck with my wrists over the years. It was really hard for me to find a handlebar that I truly felt comfortable riding. Having this opportunity meant that I got to make something exactly the way I wanted and needed it to be.

Vital BMX: Is there a story behind the name?

Anthony Napolitan: I really wanted the handlebars to be tied to me directly. I didn't want to have a signature product and not have the name of them misrepresent me. Biomech is the style of tattoo work that I have. I have arm sleeves that tie together into a chest piece and a leg sleeve. There is just something about biomech and bio organic artwork that blows my mind. There are endless possibilities of design, not to mention the Bio Mech bars rolls off the tongue pretty nicely!

Alex Hiam

Vital BMX: Favorite feature of your bars and why?

Alex Hiam: My favorite part of the bars would have to be the tapered cross bar. We reinforced it at the right place, so it's extra strong, but still has a light and fast feel when doing barspins and more. I currently run the 9.4" bar. I used to ride the 8.8" rise, but I went bigger as I grew taller. It's a perfect height for my riding style and comfortable on my back. Also, these bars are great for riding bowls and quarter pipes because of their nice leverage and power when blasting an air.

Vital BMX: What's the reasoning for the chosen dimensions?

Alex Hiam: I chose a 12 degree backsweep for an overall stronger firm grip. Then, not too much up sweep, so it's easy on my shoulders.

Vital BMX: Is there a story behind the name?

Alex Hiam: I named them when I was a 13-years-old. I had been given a signature frame and was given a couple of months to think of a name. At first, I was having trouble finding something that I liked. Clint - owner of Colony BMX - and I were texting during the day the name was due. We went back and forth with name ideas and neither of us were liking any of them. The next day Chris Courtenay picked me up from school early to go ride. During the drive to the spot a song came on the radio called "Cookie Jar" by Gym Class Heroes. As I was still thinking hard on a name as the song played, the line "I got a sweet tooth and it never come loose" stood out to me. Also, at the time I loved lollipops and always had some with me. I texted Clint "Sweet Tooth" and boom, that was it. Now nearly 10 years later, here I am with a signature set of Sweet Tooth bars and forks. So rad! A special thank you goes out to Colony for giving me the opportunity to make my dream bike!
