Jaie Toohey Discusses the Tailwhip to Nothing Front Bikeflip

Jaie Toohey recently shocked the BMX world with a wild new combo - a tailwhip to nothing front bikeflip! We caught up with Jaie to learn about what went into this trick, where else he can take it, and everything else he has in the pipeline. Check it -

How’d you initially come up with the idea for this trick?

The idea for this trick came from R-Willy - Ryan Williams. He said I should try the tailwhip to nothing front bikeflip.

At what point did you think this trick was an honest possibility?

R-Willy and I were riding the airbag when he suggested it. I gave it a go and it almost worked the first first try. I was like, "that trick is definitely possible!"

So, is that where you first started working on it?

Yeah. I started working on it at Ryan Williams' house, R-Willy Land.

Did it take you a while to fully figure it out?

I figured out the momentum pretty quickly, so I spent the whole afternoon working on it to try and perfect it. I think I landed two to my pedals in the airbag.

How many tries did it take you when you brought it to the Nitro jump?

I landed it on my second attempt on the Nitro Circus jump!

Does it seem like something you’ll be able to get fully dialed or is it too unpredictable?

I feel like it's something I could dial in for sure. As long as I don't rush the momentum, the trick actually works out perfectly.

You’ve done the nothing front bikeflip to tailwhip and the tailwhip to nothing front bikeflip. Which is harder and why?

I’d have to say the tailwhip to nothing front bikeflip because it’s so much harder to throw the bike forward and down after doing a tailwhip.

Do you think this trick would work on a normal box jump or do you need something big like the Nitro jump to make it happen?

A normal size box would be quite the challenge. My goal is to do one on dirt.

So.... how about tailwhip to nothing front bikeflip to tailwhip!? Haha!

I’ve had a lot of people ask me this! Do I think it’s possible? Yes, but we will have to wait and see!

What are your plans for the rest of 2020? What events do you plan to ride?

My plans for 2020 are to ride as many events as possible! 2020 was going to be a big year for me. I was planning on riding all of the Toyota Triple Challenge stops, Nitro World Games, Munich Mash, X-Games, and many others, but due to what's going on in the world right now with the coronavirus, I'm unsure of what will still be going ahead.

What more do you think can be done with the nothing front bikeflip?

There's more coming very soon! I almost landed another new one this past weekend, so keep a close eye on my Instagram. I'm about to head out to R-Willy Land this weekend to try to get a new one done to the landing and yes - it involves a nothing front bikeflip!
