Kink is always on top of the BMX game. Their new video project - Intervention - will be debuting in around one week and they took a fresh approach to the concept of creating a high-end riding video for this one. While most “full-length” projects are filmed over a long time period, Kink brought on three filmers (instead of just one) and had multiple trips with different riders taking place at the exact same time in order to capture what usually takes a year (or more) in a mere matter of months. We caught up with two key players from Intervention - Kink TM Jay Roe and Kink pro Albert Mercado - to get a better understanding of the project. Get ready. This is going to be one to remember!

So…. What is Intervention?

It is the whole Kink team going in and putting it down to showcase who and what we are for 2016.

Why online?

We want everyone and anyone to be able to view our work right now. The more eyes the better. Right now, we feel like this is the best way to do it. We are talking about releasing a hard copy as well. We'll see!

What separates Intervention from the rest of the videos you guys frequently release through the web?

The entire Kink squad is involved from flow to pro - minus some younger guys. We had a clear mission for this video and that was to get as much quality footage as we can in a short amount of time with everyone getting stuff. There were times we had three trips going on at one time for this.

How is it going to be released?

There is going to be online live stream premiere on Saturday, January 23rd! There will be two showings. Times and details will be posted online all over the place.

Kink happens to have some of the best filmers in the BMX game on the team. Who all was involved in this one?

We're pretty lucky to have multiple rider / filmers on the squad. About 95% of the footage was filmed by Darryl Tocco, Dan Coller, and Calvin Kosovich.

Who took on editing duties?

Darryl Tocco did all the editing.

How long was the filming period? and where was it filmed?

The first official trip was in August of 2015 in Riga, Latvia. From there, we took to Barcelona, Costa Rica, California, Boston, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Austin, Dallas, and Rochester. Around four months in total. Dan Coller had so much footage stacked up from the past year and - along with the Intervention Trips - we decided it was fitting to make the part you see in Intervention. Ha! There are a few clips from guys that made it from older times, but it is mostly fully filmed within the last few months of 2015.

Who can we expect to see full sections from?

The dudes that put it down the hardest! All I can say for sure is Dan Coller has gone completely insane on his bike for this…

Any significance to the name?

For sure. Intervention is a term that can be applied to many things and situations. Whether you need an intervention to pull a trick, an intervention with a person - or group - to make them better, or something bigger. This is our intervention. We hope people will watch the video and get motivated to do something - ride more, travel more, think more, chill more... Whichever it is that fits you!

Should we expect any surprises?

Lots of big things coming from Kink BMX this year. Stay tuned!

Albert Mercado

What are your thoughts on the Intervention project as a whole?

As a whole, I think the idea behind Intervention is awesome. I can't give out all of the details, but you guys will be stoked when you watch the trailer.

Web release versus DVD… your thoughts?

Regardless of how a project is release, I'm hyped to work on something with my friends and teammates. The whole DVD versus web release shouldn't even be a topic of discussion.

How was your experience filming for the project?

Filming for Intervention has been real fun. The Kink crew is so chill about filming.

Who did you film with?

I filmed with Calvin Kosovich, Darryl Tocco, and Doeby.

Are you happy with the footage you stacked?

Absolutely! I'm pretty hyped on what I filmed for the video. I managed to grab a few things I am particularly psyched about and I can't wait for the video to drop!

Whose footage are you looking forward to seeing the most?

Really excited to see everyone's footage because I haven't had the chance to see much of it. I am most excited to see what Dan Coller has cooked up. He has been on a mission lately!

How did filming for Intervention compare to filming for previous long-term Kink projects?

The Kink crew is awesome. They make filming and working on stuff really fun. I can't really compare projects because it's always been a low-stress situation no matter what we are doing.

Was balancing filming for this and your other real-life priorities difficult?

Not at all. My "real life priorities" are very flexible.

What’s next for you?

Currently working on my section for Likewise - the San Diego based DVD project by our dude Doeby. I also have a couple other web projects in the works, so look out for those this year! (Fire emoji)
