Photo Portfolio: Sam Adams

You’ve been seeing a fair amount of Sam Adams’ photos here on VitalBMX, so we thought we’d give you a look at some of his favorite images. He lives in Southern California, so he’s got plenty of BMX to shoot all the time, but he’s open to shoot anything. Read his bio below to see what Sam had to say about himself, and then check out the ten incredible photos he sent our way. Click here, or click either photo below to see all of Sam's images.

My name is Sam Adams; I am currently living in Ventura, CA, but grew up in Albuquerque, NM, which is where I first started riding BMX. My dad took me to the local BMX track one day and I just had a blast with a few friends. I got into racing for a few years until the Los Altos Skatepark opened up and then I just started riding there all the time.

It was about that same time that I got started with photography. (It was my sophomore year in high school when I started my photography class.) I just got finished taking metal shop with all the stoners and trouble kids and was super-bummed on that, so I thought photography might be something fun to try. From day one I was hooked. I started shooting around 3-5 rolls of film a week on what I loved doing the most—BMX. When I got started, I wanted to take pictures of all the places that my bike took me; to all the weird, wacky, and randomly awesome places. I just wanted to show people what our lives are like and the places we go.

In short, by showing people things that they can't see themselves, that's how I figure I transitioned myself to photojournalism. When I’m not photographing BMX, I am working on something that falls into the photojournalism category. I have had my work published in places such as the Los Angeles Times on the West Coast, The Washington Post, on the East, and dozens of places in between. So when someone asks me what I like to shoot, it’s all over the board, I don't think I have any one thing that I like shooting the most, I go through phases. Some weeks it's BMX and others I'll just be out running around a forest fire, or a football game—you never know with me.
