Hi. It has been a while. Anyways I've grown tired of 25/9 and the rapid back pedal on fast fakies. Which is better? I've rode 28/9 before and liked it. Never rode 30/9 but I'm open to either. I ride street. No dirt. No park. Infact mostly flat. Thanks.

I have run 30-9 for a couple of years and really liked it. Just recently dropped down to 28 and haven't noticed much difference to be honest.

What it comes down to really is your frame clearance. Most modern frames won't clear 28 let alone 30

25x9 is way too slow, i'm used to ride a 28x9 since years and today, i had try to adjust chainstays lengh, and tried different precise settings with my old 25t sprcket.
So i go out with this tiny 25x9 and that was way too easy to pedal, but impossible to accelerate...
So i just go back to 28 immediatly, but for you who come from 25x9, take a 28t you'll be fine, 30x9 is a serious man ratio.

If you only ride street 28-9 is fine because it has a good balance of acceleration and top speed. 30-9 is really slow to take off but it's more harder on the legs.

Thanks guys. Yeah the frame clearance shouldn't be too much of an issue, most of my frames are from 2006-2011. I'll probably just go for the 28/9.

8t drivers aren't really common, but technicaly 25x8 should be like a 28x9 because both have a 3.1 ratio.

I'm a huge clitoris because my frame barely clears a 28t by a cunt hair, my cunt hair specifically.

Getting an envy and it has a blind hub which is 8.. Like you said though, not really common...
I'll see what it's like or just downsize sprocket to 23t or something..

What gearing do you run usually ?
It´s all about ratio, the classic 25x9 is 2,7 ratio, 28x9 is 3,1 (25x8 is the same 3,1).
But if you want to keep the feeling of a small gearing like 25x9 (2.7) you can try 23x8 (2.8) just a bit stiffer like a 26x9 (2.8).
24x8 give the clean 3.0 ratio as the 30x10.

Whatever you decide to ride, something will fit you well.

I've rode 25/8. It's like 28/9 but more stress on the chain. Not a fan of the 8t, at least not with shadow chains

I'm on the vital legit list!

between 30/9, 30/10 and 28/9, figure out which one gets you the best chainstay length (personally, I like to slam that shit), and just roll with that.

Anything about 60 gear inches feels about the same to me once I get used to it.

I ran 28/9 for years and really liked it. For the past few months I have been rocking 30/9.....it is awesome, the only time it sucks is if you ride tight street spots. Plus 30/9 put my axle right in the middle of my dropout without a half link. Not to mention big chain wheels look awesome.

I actually considered that just to mess with kids at a local park (and make them look like wusses using the EASY 25/9) hahahaa.

Or get some road bike cranks and hammer out a 54/8. BOOM.

I also want to ride my bmx in road bike spandex and road bike helmet to make them uncomfortable. Although my "pants" would be looser than some...

I like 28/9 but I wouldn't go any higher because hills would be so bad!

Go for 28/9 and like other guys say you may find 30t sprockets may not fit well and 30 maybe too much of a jump up in gear ratio also

|

6/9/2015 5:20 AM

30/9 just sounds retarded to me, no one really rides that shit

I was thinking about the frame clearance part, and I realized that it is almost entirely due to people wanting shorter and shorter rear ends. You bring the tire closer to the BB, you gotta widen the frame closer to the BB to accomodate. So quite literally people wanting a 12-13.5 rear end and to run 2.25+ tires are ENTIRELY the cause of the sprocket size being limited. We have literally made larger gearing than roughly 30t on modern frames impossible without making a HORRIBLE chain line.

Sure it is the evolution of BMX, but on the same note, it is kinda sad that we have essentially obliterated something from freestyle.
