30T to 9T Driver

I currently ride a BMX with 25-9 gearing and I hate it, far too slow!
I used to ride 28-9 on my old BTM frame.
Going back to my current build, I have a WTP Zodiac street frame,
Custom built rear wheel with a 9t driver.
The cranks are 170mm I think.
I'm just wondering, will my old 30T chain ring fit and work with this bike?
The 30T is from my old Street/dirt 24 inch wheel bike.
I can't remember what gearing the rear wheel had.

People do run 30-9 ratios, so it's totally doable, but you'll need to make sure your old 30t chain ring is compatible with your current BMX cranks.

Think you can post a photo here of the cranks and sprocket?

And your current frame has clearance for the larger sprocket.

Is would just go with a 28t. Not as hard on your driver as a 30t.

Hey guys, thanks for responding!
I'll try to take photos later tonight. I have to clean up the chain ring and remove old grease from it first.
It's a pretty standard set of cranks and chain ring so I'm guessing it'll fit without an issue. I just thought that the frame clearance may not be enough.
EDIT - I need a new driver soon anyway, soon as I get paid I'm planning to get a new driver.

I tried 30 9 for a bit, just made everything that little bit too much hard work. 28 9, or 30 10 is where it's at. If you're planning on buying a new driver, and the 30t clears your frame, you could see if there's a 10t driver for your hub

30-9 is amazing. QED.

I have just taken apart the bike, the 30T sprocket fits with about 2mm clearance. . Is that enough clearance to the chain stay? It looks pretty tight. I might take a photo.

It's so close, doesn't touch the frame but it's very, very close.

If it's not hitting, it's fine. How does the chain line look?

I haven't managed to put the chain on properly yet, the chain tool pin bent.
But it is not completely straight, more diagonal but I'm not sure how to fix that.

That’ll work dandy , every time I rode 30 9 I had barely any room

Ok cool smile
How did the gearing feel, did you like it?
Why don't you still ride it at that gear ratio?

Feels amazing , I’ll definitely be going back to it next frame I ride , didn’t fit on my wizard frame , the profile elite bearings run fast on my bike though so that kind of helps , not as stoked on 28 9 as 30 9 but it will work for now

You've got nothing to lose giving it a go. I think 30/9 on 170mm cranks won't feel good but only you can tell what feels best for you and your style of riding.

Just get a 28t, doesn’t seem like it but it’s harder to pedal with 28t as it is. 30t isn’t going to really make as much a difference as 28t though.

With experience from riding both 30 is a noticeable difference , harder to pedal but quicker and well worth it , even hauling ass down the street as fast as you can you notice 28 is slower , found that out the other day riding as fast as I could home from the skatepark trying to beat a thunderstorm

You can't fix that. If you run it with a poor chainline, you're probably going to end up with more problems than it's worth. I'd say, drop down to a 28t, to give yourself a better chainline; that way, you have a heavier gearing and your drivetrain will last a bit longer.

It’s not really noticeable to me, but then again I’m heavier than most riders. Honestly I don’t think I could even fit a bigger sprocket on my bike without losing my near perfect chain line.

i dont get how they even find these. i get if you search it up on the internet it sometimes comes up and it wont tell you these threads are 2+ years old, but some of the threads people have bumped recently have been so obscure and i do not understand how they find them.

the problem with 2 year old threads is that the large majority of people who answered and asked questions aren't active on vital anymore, so you would be a lot better just making a new thread for your problem and having the newer, active members help you, instead of having to navigate through 2 year old answers from people that don't even use this website anymore.
