Hey guys,

It's been a several year break since I've been into BMX (had kids, you know, whole deal). I bought a 2016 Kink Launch last month to test the waters (as it is a cheaper Bike). I have been out about 10 times and I am obsessed again.

I now want to get rid of the Kink and buy a bike that can be ridden hard. I like the weight of the Kink (just under 25 pounds), but I feel the top tube is a bit small for me (it's 20.25, I'm 5 11).

What is the best complete with a bigger top tube (likely 21"), similar weight, and is built tough? Want to spend between $500-1000.

Thanks!

Pretty much any complete over $600-700 can be ridden hard, just pick a brand and specs you like

^^^^pretty much this...

a couple of great deals:

1. Colony Endeavor - full Chromo and for the most part great parts for $500
2. Mongoose mode900 - full Chromo (even the cranks), but not so great parts (replace with better as they go) for $200

I am personally saving for a Verde Luxe, but the Colony is also tempting...

same story as you, minus the kids part, but rode in the 70's and 80's. Got back into it about 5 years ago (kept on a bike via MTB ) 2 years ago my step son wanted to get into it so that got me out even more and now I am addicted

That Colony Endeavor in Black does look nice - is there any cons of that bike?

I was also looking at the Verde Luxe - how much of a pain in the ass would it be to install brakes on this?

I can't do a Mongoose - just reminds me of when I used to ride and those were the Target bikes.

Some people "con" on some of the parts, but Colony is pretty reputable in general

the Luxe ships with break mounts on, and actually, unless specified, comes with the brakes in the box. Our LBS's put the brakes on the ones on the floor...the one that I test rode.

Funny about the Mongeese...when I rode they were the top of the line. My first bike was an 81 Supergoose. It got stolen and I later on got a 88 Californian Pro, which i still ride. It is a shame that they became crap bikes for the most part, but money makes people do the wrong things most of the time

I just want something that will take riding and still maintain that weight 24ish pounds. I'd rather spend 1000 once than 400 every year. The verde luxe does look compelling. Anything else I should be looking at?

dude, I am with you on the spending $1000 once rather than $400 2 or more times...

look at some of the WeThePeople bikes in the same range as the Luxe if you still want to shop around...pretty swanky stuff their as well

I have been away for over 4 and a half years. Just got the itch and bought a bike and also loving it. I went the same way with spending more up front. Bought the Sunday SoundWave Special. $1000 but it's one of the best completes available.

Wow. This looks beautiful. I think I'm sold. If I am 5 11, I really should be getting a 21" top tube, right?

yeah. I forgot about Sundays....don't know why. They are awesome!

Verde Luxe or Soundwave Special?

|

11/8/2016 7:13 AM

I like the parts on the Soundwave better, except for the sprocket. But it is more expensive, so that's kind of expected.

Some of the parts on the Soundwave are so good that I don't consider them upgradable, only sidegradable.

I agree with the "side-gradable" comment above about the Soundwave...
