Any 5'8" Riders? Bike Sizes Please..

Looking for overall advise I guess on bike sizes and whatnot..

I know, I know.. its personal preference..

However would you say this is true, "if you ride any bike long enough you will get used to that bike regardless of size" it just may take longer..

Picked up a 2012 Kink GAP 20.5" TT and 2011 Kink APEX 20.75" TT at the same time.. chainstays for both are 13.75" Initially the Apex felt "just right" but since it was pegless I went with the Gap...rode it for 2-3 months..

Gap Experience - manualing seems easier on this one, but I couldn't hop over sh*t as I would loop out, stand alone bunny hops were ok but any gap or object I tried to jump over I would loop the f*ck out...

Crank arm stripped so went to the Apex, this was about 3 weeks ago..

Apex Experience - basically having to "relearn" my manuals, just realized 2day it takes SLIGHTLY more effort on this bike to manual and maintain it.. but getting back to my GAP levels just takes more effort.. gaps/jumps took some getting used to and so definitely NOT looping out like I was on the GAP..

However I can't quite explain it but it almost seems like this bike is not the "right" fit for me. Its just a feeling I am getting more and more as I continue to ride it...

So there you have it, thats where I'm at... question:

I mainly ride street with some park, bout 95% street and 4% Park and 1% Dirt..
I am a non technical dude, who just loves to manual and feeble grind.. i could almost do that all day.. ultimately I would like to get into Barspins, 180's and Fakies, leading into 360's..

What bike sizes are you 5'8" riders out there riding and WHY?

let me know...

p.s. taking the Apex to the park this Saturday.. will be my 1st time riding Park with it.. maybe I'll get my answers there!

I'm 5'8" riding a 20.5 with 8.25 and a topload stem.

I like the cramped space. lol
I think it gives me a better leverage to pull, combine that with my short CS... i have a very loopy setup.

I'd get a 20.75 if i needed a new frame.

I am 5,7 and used to ride a 20,5tt with a 13,5 cs. I am now riding a 20,65 tt and a 13,25 cs.

The bike is way more comfortable and stable. Shorter cs is reaponsive but harder to balance in manual.

5.8 over here, I went from a 20.5 to 20.75 about 2 years ago and wouldn't go back, 20.75 feels right for my height.

yeah, 20.75 is probably most ideal height wise. I've ridden it for the better part of my bmx experience and it's roomy enough for sure. Been messin with a 20.5 lately and I miss that bit of leverage from a longer tt. I feel it especially in my hops. Going 21.25 on a short reach stem next.

Don't blame too many of your issues on your bike. Because when you get skilled enough you can kill it on any setup.

5'3 ride a 21in frame with 8.75 rise bars with top load stem

20.75 8.7 on a topload with 16mm of spacers and a 5mm dustcap.
I believe the stock kinks come with a single 8mm or 10mm spacer & 5mm dustcap and can fit about another 3mm spacer.

With today's bikes it seems to me one can go an easy 1/2 longer on the top-tube without it effecting performance "unless the person has T-Rex arms'.

Back in the day when bikes were heavier and or had longer chain-stays like racing bikes, top-tub length was more of an issue.

The answers in this thread have been an eye opener for me.. yours particularly!

good stuff!

Here's what I got out of it..

TT size matters but only to a small degree, one should become accustomed to anything in due time..

The SHORTER the chainstay is, the easier it is to manual and bunny hop.. right?

|

10/3/2014 6:21 PM

So based on the above..

What are the things I can adjust to make the bike fit "just right"..

again I'm 5'8" bout 200lbs..longer torso, shorter legs, and slightly long arms... and mainly ride street and by street I mean manuals and gaps, but looking to get into 180's and 360's and BARSPIN's..

i.e. new bars? and if so what size in bars should I look at?

flipping stem help?

more or less spacing in the stem?

Just looking for yalls thoughts and inputs..

very much appreciated!

Current again is 2011 Kink Apex, 20.75" TT, 13.75" chainstays, Badger Bars v2 8"

|

Well a lot of it is personal feel. You have to try out what you like and figure that out. My brother and I are built exactly the same and same height, but ride totally different set ups. It's just a matter of what's comfortable to you.

right, I got you...I guess what I'm asking tho is...

well my TT is 20.75" and chainstays is at 13.75".. what else on the bike can do to change it up to see if I can get the feel right?

new bars right, but what else?

du stem bru. more or less reach/rise will affect bar position as well as overall feel of tt length. It's one of the cheapest parts on a bike that actually changes the feel in a big way.
