BMX and Good Character?

i think mike hoder had a pretty bad story until he started riding again

I heard Edwin Delarosa talk about how Blackman was a scumbag in some interview on TCU.

There's good and bad people in in all walks of life, but I think for the majority bmx attracts decent, creative & interesting individuals.

In the uk the street scene does seem to attract some right sketchy fucks tho.

That can be true, but i never really heard of a BMXer killing a person, raping a person, etc. But i think i saw the same thing about Blackman, although, Edwin may just have some beef with him.

I think good character has to do with the person and not so much with bmx.

I don't know about others, but i think bmx helps me to have a good attitude. Whenever i get pissed about school or anything really i just go for a ride and it usually helps. Without bmx i'd be pissed a lot of the time.

I agree with this to an extent.

Out of the roughly 20-30 riders in my area, most are the cocky asshats who think any way you ride is stupid unless it is exactly like theirs.

There are a few chill dudes though.

As to character, I think most of us are similar in the sense that we don't like the team side of things as much, and prefer to take our progression into our own hands, but a lot of the riders are dickheads about everything.

No , if anything , it promotes me to experience my mischievious side.

Blackman IS Scum! I have seen edits of him admitting to stealing Kids bikes. Not even like Rich Kids Bikes that can replace them. ANY Kid that had something he wanted it was his & he then sold on whatever he didn't want. Totally admitted it too! Admitted to mugging "Rich Kids" with knives & shit. I wouldn't have ANYTHING to do with that guy! I believe Edwin had beef with him because it was Edwin that got him hooked up on Animal & he basically stole from them. He would get himself parts for "New Bikes" or "Sprucing Up His Ride" & sell them off for Drug/Alcohol Money!!

However, In BMX There are SHIT LOADS more decent people than there are bad! I mean i know society doesn't look at most that way. Fucking Grown Men riding kids Bikes scratching up rails & shit, get in the Fucking SKATE PARKS they have made for you to ride in!!! Etc, Etc, Etc......

Depends on who's "Judging" I guess. I know there are numerous good guys in BMX, I try to be a Gentleman & share my knowledge & help out as you know Maximus! We're not all bad lol

EDIT: Totally agree with Kenny, Fucking kids in the UK Street Scene! Most are legit guys but there are some PROPER Hood Rat Chav Drug Dealer Knife you if you look at them dodgy kinda kids too hahaha!

Ahh i didnt know all that about Blackman! Im sorry to hear that, although im not a big fan of people worrying about their image, i think (especially if you are pro) everyone should be good to others, unless provoked within reason.

BMX is a very diverse outlet. As a whole, I do think it promotes good character. However, like anything else, there are plenty of bad dudes caught up in the BMX mix.

Even with the majority of street riding being against the law, it's never done with malicious intent. There's a big difference between grinding a ledge and purposely vandalizing something for no true reason. I think that needs to be recognized.

when I was a kid I tried to stab a kid in the neck, ive been in some heavy fights and such

I know people that have done some serious assaults and shit that rode (my one friend beat a guy with a crank arm in a massive brawl), people with drug problems that ride, kids that did some B&E's and shit too... idk

but some of them were good people overall that just did some bad shit... doesn't mean theyre bad people...

but I could say that I feel like bmx is an outlet that people could use to keep busy and off of doing stupid/bad shit

And lots of the riders at my park are huge potheads, sure pot might not seem so bad, but it fucks your life up. You.lose money buying it, you get involved in the crowd that does serious stuff. And you can bet on the winners of fight night. Then the cops get involved sometimes. My town is small, but it is as crazy as Oakland.

This for sure. I think all the bad shit that happened was after he quit with Sunday and before he rode for S&M, so basically while he was between sponsors. There was an interview with (I think) the Albion, I'll post the link if I can find it.

THIS. ugh some people here you don't even wanna be at the same park as them, or eben the same fucking town with them. Like fro cereals, some of the people here you even glance at and they WILL come at you with a knife or even a gun.

I know this is non related to BMX but my Mom is a teacher, she went to have a look at a school in Birmingham area (the rough side) * When she got there she was worried of someone torching the car, once at the school a security guard came out to the barbed wire fence, with a dog, and let her in. The first thing that she heard was from the headteacher saying, I KID YOU NOT, "If you hear gunshots, follow the children as they know what to do".

I agree to this, BUT on the same point, when caught, MOST riders I come across act like they are entitled to do whatever they want, so when they are questioned/caught/called out, they get defensive, act like idiots and mess with whoever they want, rather than leave politely, which does not help the overall image of BMXers in the general publics eye.

HA if you actually think your town of 8600 people is as crazy as oakland you really need to get out more.

I say the people you meet really depends on where you live. Down here in la I feel like bmx has a way more street oriented culture than most places. Growing up riding in the bay area (fun fact: I can actually comment on oakland seeing as how I grew up there) I would say the majority of riders are relatively wealthy and in general more white people. Down here in la, I mostly see mexican people riding. It may be partly because I really only ride street and la is like mini-mexico, but even when going to parks, pretty much all the time you see more ethnic riders than white. The kids down here like to get grimy and it keeps a good street feel to the riding. I don't get the same kind of suburban atmosphere I do when riding in the bay area, where kids are dropped off by their moms with lunch bags, or roll up in their bmw with their perfect bikes that their parents bought them. My bike is pretty much mint, my car is in decent shape (albeit nothing special but I did buy it brand new in 2006). Does that mean I am "suburban" and not "street" regardless of where I ride?

I have been around this sport and MX for a really long time, I have found that it really depends where you are geographically, and what kind of riding.. If you think about bmx as a sport its relatively cheap compared to other stuff. You can have a kid that parents do not give a dam about gets a bike through some trade and now is mobile, shitty parents bad area other misled kids boom bad stuff happens..

Same area, good parents. buys kid a mid-range 300 buck bmx takes him to track where they have to pay more money for fees and membership etc.. what kind of kids "mostly" are at a place you have to pay to be?? almost all the bmx tracks I have been to are really family oriented. Most street/parks are kinda sketchy especially if they are unmonitored.. and some but not most dirt jump spots are in between..

I figure if you are finding dbags they were that way before they were on a bike.. its not like this sport breeds it..

A buddy of mine used to live in Manchester. There is no getting away from it he IS posh, His Parents have worked FUCKING HARD & they are VERY well off! He used to live just down the road from an Area all the locals knew as "Gunchester" It was all done by Postcodes & People in the shitty "Gunchester" area Knew who & who wasn't from their postcode, They'd know when new "fams" were moving in & scope them out see what kids they have etc. My friend had a couple of mates over the "Territory Lines" Literally 5 or 6 houses down, good kids, just happened to get houses on the outskirts of the postcode until there was a road numbers shake up & it became part of the shit areas post code. So my friend couldn't go to his friends house, literally he had a gun pointed at his head & told he would be "Capped" & then Raped because he was a Posh Faggot & would want it (Yes by Guys too, But obviously they aren't gay because "Dey R Fuckin Ard Ennit!") So he never went past a certain house again.

I think this whole Nigel Sylvester "fucking shit up In NYC traffic" os giving a bad reputation to BMX.
The fact they cut from car to car risking their lives and creating chaos definitely doesn't contribute to the image society has of BMX.
Nigel remains a legend of the streets from the past, but I must say I'm really disappointed with his recent changes.

Nah I'm not saying that I think you're reading a bit far into what I said, I just have never met a hardcore street rider that is super loaded (especially down here in la, but also the bay). I suppose it also heavily depends on your definition of street. Street is more a style than a label for me. It means you can ride around a city and hit things each block cuz you can come up with random ways to hit things. Just because you ride bmx in your cul de sac and don't have access to a skatepark/dirt jumps, that doesn't mean you ride street to me. I guess that makes me biased in the sense that i feel to truly be able "ride street" you need to be in a somewhat urban area. Also a hardcore street rider is someone who literally learned how to ride bikes in the street, not some skatepark rat who decided that street riding is cool and they took their skatepark skills to the street. Using that as a base I would say that how you ride is usually just a product of your neighborhood. If you live in the suburbs youre more likely to be wealthy and also have a skatepark nearby which would prob gravitate you towards that. thats all


PRETTY MUCH:
If a suburb kid with a bmw only rode street, and used his car to drive to other cities to ride instead of skateparks they are definitely street. I've just never seen this happen
