Guys, just wanted to help out some of you youngsters who may be riding a beginner bike or a $250 bike that came with crappy parts (Like mine did). Its very easy to upgrade, and fairly cheap if you know where to buy.

#1 Buy a bike that comes with Chromoly frame, fork & bars.
Everything else can be upgraded very easily. There are many $250 bikes on the market that are chromo.

#2 Open Ball American Bottom Bracket Upgrade: $30 eBay

#3 Open Ball Headset Upgrade: $17 eBay
This is a very nice product made by AEST. Its a Sealed Threadless headset, designed specifically for non integrated head tubes. As long as your head tube I.D. measures 34mm this will fit your bike. Fits 1-1/8" steering tube forks. This set up is WAY smoother and stronger than the open ball bearings.

The stock chains are often times poop. Scoop up an Izumi on eBay. Comes with master link and is much stronger.

250 dollar chromoly frame complete? Besides a mongoose l100 u didn't think that exists

|

12/4/2017 6:09 PM

Yeah... I'm a little confused by that as well, unless you are talking used.

Those are the first things i changed out when i refurbished my old bike. It went from "crunchy" to smooth but i spent over $100 for the 3 piece cranks (haro 1978, they look just like the ones shown), american sealed bb, 510 kmc chain, and Verde Neo headset.
But after a few months the bike started creaking everywhere (i use mobile1 syn grease). IMHO I think the conversion parts are low quality but they are an upgrade and will make the bike feel way better if the loose ball bearings are worn/broken/neglected.

They definitely exist. I just bought one last week.
Can't get hung up on brands... Cult, Sunday, GT, Haro... All their $250 bikes are junk. Gotta look for specs, and shop components and not brands.

FYI, the Eastern Javelin is NOT a 100% Chromo frame. The parts might be nice for transfer over to a new frame later but not nearly on par with quality aftermarket stuff. Unless I was severely hindered by budget, I wouldn't bother with the Javelin. The Framed bikes look alright. I once clicked on one of their banner ads on this forum to see what they were hawking. Everything I saw from them at the time seemed like hi-tens. Not sure about their quality, overall. Haven't heard anything & never seen one in person. But, hey, it's an alternative to the Mongoose L100.

Mechanik STI should be on this list. Standard to integrated conversion headset.

This review is from the Framed Witness above:

(Framed Witness 20" https://www.the-house.com/qfrwit20dgg17zz-framed-bmx-bikes.html)

"Take your risks
I recently ordered this bike and during the shipping my bike was dropped, leaving a hole in the side of the box that the bike came in and from that drop the front forks got bent so badly that I couldn't put on the front tire in assembly. However, I contacted the Framed Bike Company and they shipped me new forks for free. All I am saying here is take your risks when ording this bike, beacuse minr came damaged."

Not sure I trust what they are selling (in their brochure) as "100% chromoly". I have worked in bike shops for years (in the past) & I have seen my share of damaged bike boxes (holes in the sides are not uncommon). I cannot fathom what could have bent the fork. I mean, that just seems unlikely for a chromoly fork. Just sayin'....

Sorry to hijack.

Would love to know more about this. My current frame is just a WTP Curse complete, it has a none integrated headset and I have a brand new integrated headset just sitting in my shed.

So if I were to buy this can I use the campy spec integrated headset or the sealed bearings from it? And would I need new forks?

Thanks

If I could go a tenth as high as Larry Edgar goes, then I would still be blasting super high.

An integrated headset means the head tube of the frame is flared and holds the bearings. The bearings sit directly in the frame. Cheap bikes have a 34mm head tube, with steel cups pressed into the tube. The open ball bearings ride in these cups. These stock cups are pounded out, and you press in the aftermarket external headset. Very simple and only $17 to upgrade.

Inside Diameter of head tube needs to be 34mm.
Fork tube needs to be 1-1/8" threadless.

I posted the eBay link for the headset you would need to upgrade your non integrated headset along with the info & measurements.

The Framed bikes are full chromo, and are well made. Just because someone got a bike damaged in shipping doesn't tell me anything.

The Javelin is not full Chromo. Its a hybrid. But its better than buying a frame with NO CHROMOLY. Plus the Javelin has many high end bike components already on it. So it makes it a great buy for a beginner bike.

The Mechanik STI and the AEST external headsets are both the same thing pretty much. The AEST is $5 cheaper, has 5 colors to choose from, and free shipping.

That framed witness you linked looks alright, not thrilled about the bottom bracket setup but it would be fine for quite a while.

Absolutely. The bottom bracket takes 15 minutes to change. Super simple and cheap. Actually... You can spend like $329 and get a pretty sick Eastern. Lots to pick from once you get above $300. The Witness is a good choice too.

Yeah, but it doesn't have a full-chromo frame. If you get the 2018, it's been upgraded to a full-chromo frame but it's also another $50 ($399). At that price, you can also get the Element or the 2017 Shovelhead (which is above the two former bikes).

I wouldn't waste the time & money to upgrade a non full Chromoly framed bike. I'd just save what I'd be spending on upgrades & get something better with my initial purchase.

You can actually get the fiction savage for $25 at stolenbmx.com by using their 15% discount code sent to you by email. I just ordered my fiction savage sealed American bottom bracket and got shipping for $35.. I know it ant cheaper than what he put up there but I do know ordering from eBay you wait like 3 months to receive your parts. I ordered mine yesterday and it’s getting here tomorrow and I do know eBay has higher shipping prices and it does take longer. So technically I got it cheaper and faster

Faster? He got his 2 years ago

I mean it really don’t matter. Maybe I’m just now getting in bmx and wanted to give somebody some advice. See that’s the problem with the world these days. Put your phone down quit worrying about stupid crap and go ride.

Perhaps you should review the forum rules. Don't grave dig old threads unless there's relevant info that can be added.

& to your assertion about cheaper & faster, if you check Ebay for where the parts are coming from, you can usually get them shipped for free & as long as you aren't ordering from China, get your stuff within a week.

Lastly, he isn't "following" an old thread. When you post to any thread, it gets bumped back up to the top of the list. Hence the rule.... "don't bump old threads"

P.S. & perhaps you should slow down on the smack talk until you've been on the forum for more than a few hours.

I’m not “following” it. It’s been bumped to the top of the page, to offer useless information.

Anyone with a few brain cells can look at the expected delivery time on eBay.
