Yes. It ensures your sprocket is completely straight, so there is no tight spot in your chain or anything. It feels much, much smoother. 30/10 with a spline/socket drive sprocket, a perfect chainline, and sealed pedals is pretty much the smoothest drivetrain you can get (Not including any bigger gearing).

This.
I just personally wouldn't run a 48 spline spline drive because I fear it would wear out the splines in the sprocket overtime like 48 spline crank arms can wear out. Not saying it will for sure, I don't even know if it would but it seems like it would to me anyway.

I run a macneil lambo spline drive on my practice bike, no problems in the year or so I've been running it, feels smooth as fook and somehow stronger than any bolt drive ive used in the past.
Only bad thing I've got to say about spline drive is that it was a fucking bitch to install it, took ages, no joke it took blood & sweat...it fucking sucked.

Yup the difference is it gets rid of tight spots (what ohian) said, I'd never run it just because i dont want it to kill the splines on my cranks

So... jumping off tall ledges and huge lateral stresses won't kill the splines... but pedaling will?

i have actually worn one down on my fixed gear freestyle bike
"Of course theyre compatible theyre cranks"
but seriously though.. does it happen often that 48 spline cranks wear down and wobble a bit? =/ had i known this i would of spent the 10 extra dollars on the oddysey thunderbolts.

They wear down if you put them on/take them off improperly. Have you ever heard of the splines on a car wearing out?

exactly. things like driveshafts and steering columns are splined, and they don't just wear out from getting used..

But to be clear, they do wear. As we've discussed before, 95% of BMX riders have the IQ of a rock and can't even properly install 48 spline cranks, which is why I believe it is an inappropriate interface.
sooo. i can guarantee that i installed them wrong(didnt have the tool that was needed) but if it is fine and not wobbling is it still gonna cause troubles? (im not as worried as it may sound just intrigued )

if you greased them and then put them on, you should be fine. If you didn't grease them, hope you can snap em and warranty...

I've installed my 48 spline Animal cranks properly & kept them tight always, and they still wore out. Out of the 4 48 spline cranks I've had over the years, all but 1 of them developed this wobble & I could actually see the splines in the crank arm twisted. My Sputnic cranks never did that, but I didn't have them as long as I had the other ones though.

I had the best Salt 48-S cranks first time and babied them for almost 3 years until I got my Stolen Team 2.5's about half a year ago or more, which I now regret. The Salt cranks always stayed tight and everything and installing spline drive was amazing, lasted me also the 2 and a half years I ran my first spline drive. Can't wait to get back regular 48-spline cranks so I can run that thing again. And grease the sprocket splines well enough first time so that they break in and can slide on and off easily when adjusting or maintaining your drivetrain.

This isn't entirely true, because when I was into road/track bikes everything is bolted, and tight spots were determined by the roundness of the chainring/sprocket. Even a 48 spline sprocket could be machined so that it is oval, creating tight spots regardless of how straight it is. A well machined bolt drive sprocket should be no different than a well machined 48 spline

Mine is a year and a half + old without a single issue on a 48 spline crank.
It likely wouldn't any more than a crank arm would, unless it had room to wiggle in some way.

It's a bithc to get on, that is certain.
I run a Demolition Mugatu spline drive sprocket.

In general with bmx though tight spots are caused by people tightening the bolt before they put the crank arm all the way on and it ends up cockeyed. Or they overtighten the bolt.

I think he is referring to side to side wobble from the sprocket, causing similar effects to an out of round sprocket with a tight/loose spot.

Pretty much. The center bore will never be exactly 15/16", 22mm, or 19mm, and sometimes it's far enough off to allow you to bolt your sprocket on to the crank while the sprocket is not centered, creating the tight/loose spot. Wow, I'm really bad at explaining things but maybe that's clear.
@ticaleb: I'm running a Socket Drive Tree Lite right now. Socket drive probably isn't the only factor in this, but it feels a bit smoother than spline drive. Maybe it's just in my mind though. It's a lot easier to install, just grease it up, press it on, and go.
