Looking for advice for good form for a hop. I can already pull up and have my back end follow but to get any height, I have to suck my knees up. How to you get pop and keep your knees back over the seat? I want to try bar spins but I know I will smack my knees the way I am doing it now.

Take a video of yourself doing a hop. See where your body is positioned and then watch some videos of a few pros that can really hop (Brandon Begin, Mike Hoder, Anthony Panza) and then see where you can work on your hop. Most hops today are J-Hops and called Bunny Hops. Sounds like your have the hardest part down (pulling up hard). Good luck and post your video up here so that riders can possible see where your hang up may be.

Make sure to push your bars forward as you're tucking your knees up

Thanks for the advice, I went out quick to take a quick vid.

You need to compress your body down more before you hop

|

3/14/2020 11:09 AM

Other than that, you should tuck your legs in more when you peak. You're a little to penciled out the entire time.

Dang, you're getting pretty high for how straight you are up. I'm all like getting tucked down and jumping up and I still think you are higher than me. Good job!!! I think you will really hop high eventually!

Ride a little faster for a bit more stability and lift as high as you can (my bars often just touch my leg) then bend your knees as much as possible while pushing forward to level out the bike.

It's been said but, yeah, more compression before you hop and you need to bring you legs up after the hop to get more height. As for your bars, you are "kinda" doing what I call the "D" shape (that's good). You pull up (the " I " on the D-shape). At the top of that pull-up, as you bring your legs up, you also bring your arms up (elbows out) and sorta push your bars forward and around to form the rest of the D-shape (top to bottom of the D-shape). This is all really natural...eventually. I wouldn't concentrate too much on all of this at once. I'd concentrate on the initial crouch and bringing your legs up after your pull-up.

Just put something on the ground to hop over. Start with a 2x4, then add a brick then use random shit and just start hopping over it. Or better yet go ride the streets and hop onto and off of every curb you find. That’s the best way to learn. In the streets on shit you come across randomly.

Yeah, Thought I'd try to put together a visual of the "knee bend" for illustration (as well as the "give yourself something to hop over" practice. It helps to motivate you to make sure you are clearing something. Many times, I believe people don't realize how high they are actually hopping. In this case here, I wasn't even trying to go high, just clear the stack in front of me. Which just goes to show.... "you don't know how high....".

What size tires did you go with on that one? Looks like Maxxis, eh?

Yeah, those are Maxxis Grifters (Kevlar bead) (some of the best tires out, IMHO). I would have to look at them to confirm, but I want to say those are the 1.9's.

Those are the knobbiest 1.9's I've seen in years.

Alright... Double checked... They are 2.1's (hence the larger looking size).

learning to hop over something will always help you really learn to hop.

as said above, get anything ( 2 x 4 ) empty box, stick, dead cat. etc .

it will force you to focus on where your rear tire is and help you figure out when to REALLY pull everything up.

great job dudes.

The night before last I felt like I was getting higher. Then last night I was trying so hard I think I got worse. But it was wet out and I'm hoping that affected my technique. Cuz it was ugly. I wanna hop as high as you guys. LOL. I'm not sure I'll ever get that high. Starting so late in the game.

I guess it's good to try.

I'm glad to see you can get that high with your seat that high Mishinn. Last night I tried to run my seat nearly slammed and I told myself that's the last time I'm trying it low. I've tried it low 3 or 4 times now and I just don't like it. For some reason it just makes the bike feel weird to me. Maybe I'll change that opinion someday but I see other good riders with it higher, so.....

I'm surprised that 2.1's don't feel really hard when landing from that high. What PSI are they at?

They aren't pumped to their max (110). I think I have them up to around 80psi. Yeah, I didn't even set the seat height other than to be sure the post was in the the depth it needed to be as I wasn't planning on riding it much yet. Honestly, I didn't even tuck up to get that height. It was a relatively normal hop. I wasn't even trying to go that high... just enough to clear the boards for illustration purposes. It wasn't until I looked at the video that I realized I was as high as I was. After the hop, is also when I realized how high my seat actually was. Not because it was in the way but because I could actually sit and pedal! LOL.

Yeah, I'm not sure where I want mine at yet I just know I don't like it super low. One thing is that makes a difference is stand over height or length of seat tube. Since the stand over height is kind of low on my bike it makes it look taller. But if you look at it in relation to the stem... I think I like it if the nose is just about the height of the stem. Maybe a bit lower.

Here's Erik's bike (one of them, I think it's the current one I see him riding): I notice it seems to change from time to time where it's at but I've never seen it slammed on his bike.

seat height isn't as important as you might think. Maybe when you start hopping 3+ feet...

here is a picture from like '82...
that i can't embed 'cause i'm sum kinda dummy... lol

That is true. Take a look at this pic of me (and my seat height), during this hop circa 1988

Maybe a little TOO close to the boys there LOL but yeah... Mine's not that high. I gotta lower it just a tad after riding it. I think I like it to be right about where the calf muscle meets the side of knee bone when pinching. Or just a bit lower. Good thing is I'm not real tall so it's not super duper high at that point.

That is a super cool pic and super cool bike and dude. LOL. What year was that? I always lusted after mag rims like that. The best I could manage growing up was an anodized rear red rim my Mom bought me. LOL.

Your bike reminds me of this movie I started watching on Amazon. I never did finish it I think I fell asleep. It was some BMX type movie from Australia and what's her name was in it as a teenagers.... oh what's her name.... Hang on...… Cruises Ex wife, Keith Urban's wife.... You know who I'm talking about.....

Sounds right. There was something about them trying avoid some shady characters that were following them and I think they found a stash of stolen merchandise or something. The walkie talkies they were using. They were in a cemetery....

What is her name? Ugh.. My... Ah, it just came to me, Nicole Kidman. LOL.

One of my Friends from High School keeps telling me I need to watch "Rad". But I have no clue where to find that one. LOL. I think I looked it up on Amazon and I don't think it was on there.

Watched Rad constantly as a kid. At least a couple times every summer. BMX Union still has a link:

That was in about 1988-1989ish on my Hutch Trickstar. Loved that bike! You can't really see where the seat is in that pick but it wasn't anywhere my "fellas" would get hung up. "Everything" is over the rear tire. Point is, high hops can be attained long before the seat becomes an issue. Anyway, the funny thing is, looking back, I don't even remember where I got the mags. I don't remember putting them on. Nothing. I know where I was and what he were doing but nothing about what I was thinking in some of the parts on that bike. That pic was taken at an airshow at RAF Mildenhall. We pretty much ignored the airshow and put on our own show for the crowd. Great times.

No more than a fist of seat post, and if you are not touching the seat ya ain't bending your knees enough.
