I would look into a nice used setup to check it out, in case you don't like it, AND continue to save to cover broken parts/things you want to change.

Used is a last resort in my opinion, sometimes if you buy a brand new complete bike from your local shop they might hook you up with some grips/other stuff or free tune ups. Buying used is very risky if you don't check the entire bike out because you never know what could be wrong with it.

Always buy new parts . You get a warranty , customer appreciation , receipt / proof of purchase and if anything happens you can use the said above to help out . Buying off someone can be cheap financially but if you snap a part or its bent or cracked your out the money you just spent .

When dealing with a complete , unless the guy selling is super into BMX and seems like an honest guy , and only if the bike is super good part wise and maintained , then maybe I'd think about it . Otherwise go to a local shop and they'll help you out.

I'd go used 400 could get you an OK complete. But you could buy a nice used custom if you find the right deal.

Honestly, I looked it up and I'm thinking about buying so I have all summer to see if I wanna get more into BMX, Should I upgrade the mongoose down the line and or buy new again?

Oh, and by the way thanks for all the feedback guys it really helped me out.

I buy loads of stuff second hand. My hubs and cranks are probably about 4th hand now. Same with my old frame. My bars are 4th hand, seat 3rd hand. Even my grips are second hand haha. I splash out on new parts every now and then, but usually only if I want something specific and no one has it second hand.

Then again, round here there's so many people quitting and swapping parts all the time everything is dirt cheap. You'd be lucky to get 300 for a 1400 bike. My friend recently sold an almost mint condition credence mod frame for 100 (they cost 400 new here). He bought that second hand, complete bike with profile hubs and cranks, credence stem and bars, pitchforks for 500 and it had never been ridden. I tried to sell my old bike for 300 and no one was interested (cult frame and bars, odyssey forks, proper hubs, odyssey twombolts etc). #coolstorybro
It all depends on your area, and how cheap you can get a bike. If it's cheap but good, go for it, even if you need to replace a few bits straight away it will still work out a good deal.

I would say either way, make sure you get the full Chromo frame and fork if you can. the frame at least....you can replace with better parts as you go, but you want that main structure to be solid

Personally, in all of the activities I do that are built on damage to equipment (drumming, hockey, BMX/MTcool I try to buy new when I can so that I know how ALL of the damage happened. It gives me more of a sense of control. Sometimes it makes me have to wait longer to actually acquire the equipment, but it is worth it in the end.

As many have mentioned, keep looking used (untill your patience runs out)...sometimes you can find a gem. Check out second bike shops as well. Many times a great bike ends up there due to parents cleaning out garages and just seeing a great BMX bikes as an "old kids bike", or guys "outgrowing" their BMX, and they just dump it
