So I bought a merritt 19mm mid bb kit to use on my new frame since my old frame had an american bb. Well I guess I need a new spindle now too because the threads on my spindle don't allow the merritt kit to fit! So can anyone tell me what size spindle I have from the pic, and also should I send back the merritt kit for a diff size or should I get a spindle that will fit the merritt kit? Do I need new cranks if I get a new spindle? Thanks for any help, this shit is a headache lol.

check the diameter of the spindle, it looks like its diameter increases where the bearings go, if the rest of the spindle is like 19mm then just get it to someone who can decrease the diameter where its bigger. I had a similar spindle too, I did that, and it fixed it...

yup this....... do some research before you start tearing shit apart/putting stuff together... know what is compatible with what.... makes life alot easier, i think if people on this forum would do a little research we wouldnt get clogged up with all these dumb common sense questions....research! you'll be surprised at all the valuable information you can retain and maybe use later on in life

I have only had two bikes that had that style of 8-spline spindle and they both had unsealed bearings and American bottom bracket. I'm not sure it works with a frame that requires a Mid bottom bracket.

(EDIT: I realize that Mid sealed bearings are the same as American sealed bearings. The issue is a spindle for unsealed bearings maybe not working with Sealed bearings).

If anyone is wondering the spindle I pictured is from a mongoose mode 900. Is the stolen spindle that was suggested worth the extra coin over this one https://www.danscomp.com/products/455080/Mission_Chromoly_Spindle.html and will I need a sprocket adapter for either the stolen or mission spindle? Thanks for the help really appreciate it!

most new sprockets will come with the tophat/adapter 22mm to 19mm conversion..... all sprockets that i have orded did, if your using the same sprocket from your old bike it should work with your new 19mm spindle... you might need one if the sprocket was on the thicker part of your old spindle, i cant tell from your pic or the one i got sitting in my garage (sprocket still on spindle)

is the sprocket welded to the crankarm? if not take it off and take a pic of it laying flat next to the crank arm so we can see both holes

are both ends of your old spindle the same diameter or is one side bigger? if one side is thicker your gonna need new crank arms

|

All you need is an 8 spline 19mm spindle. The one you have is for unsealed bearings. If you have a 19mm mib bb, just buy a spindle , and bolt your crank arms on.

Both ends are the same size. Sprocket is not welded on.

A mid bb won't fit in an American bb shell. You need a sealed American bb for a 19mm axle, and an 8 spline 19mm axle for a sealed bb. That sprocket looks like it should've already had a tophat washer with the old axle, definitely needs one

i believe his new frame is a mid.... he wants to use his old sprocket and crank arms on his new frame.... just needs 19mm 8 spline spindle and tophat

Ah, sorry, misread that bit. Yeah, measure the length of the axle too, may need a few spacers as the unsealed axle puts everything at a set length with no need for spacers. Although there should be plenty with the new bb

should be able to use old spindle bolts also

Yeah, but those Dan's links show different versions of 8-spline spindles that do not work with all 8-spline cranks.

8 spline spindles are all the same bro.... the stolen spindle in the link is pictured with a 48 spline, use drop down menu to select 8 spline MOB or get the mission one in the other link..... i dont know what the fuck yer talkin about... how would an 8 spline spindle not work with 8 spline cranks?

|

1/1/2017 4:57 PM

Yeah all 8 splines are 19mm. They do come in different legnths, but any of them will work with enough spacers

Not all the same, as one style is for unsealed bearings and the other style is for sealed. I know y'all know that... but I don't think OP did.

Also, I may be wrong but I think I've seen different thickness end bolt to screw the crank arms in.
