Clear pads on chrome rims?

I'm getting a new rear wheel soon, and I don't want to wear off the chrome with black brake pads. I know that it's possible not to by using the brakes lightly, but that won't work for me. I rode down one of the steepest hills in town today going about 30mph, with my pads on the rim the whole time. Anyway, I'd like to hear people's thoughts on this as I've heard clear pads do less damage to painted rims and I was wondering if it applied to chrome rims as well (if it's squeaky that won't bother me).

The problem with clear pads on chrome rims isn't the noise, it's that they work TOO well and can actually rip the pads apart. Imagine going down that hill that fast, pulling your brake and the pads just get sheered off... Yeah, not fun sounding haha.

I'm not too knowledgeable on which pads work best with chrome rims, but I've heard people recommend salmon colored pads for chrome rims. Wait till someone else confirms that though.

I was looking at some old threads on pinkbike and they all say pretty much what you said. I'll probably go with some kool-stop brake pads, I'm not sure which ones tho

That's a good thread on the museum! When I got a pair of clear pads it was for annodized rims. Someone told me clear pads are for anno rims because before the anno wears off they are the slipperiest rims you can get. When I got a chrome rear I couldnt get them to be quiet. Heard kids say "ow!" quietly a few times at the skatepark they were so loud lol. I threw on an old hardened black pair of stock pars from an old.haro. I loved it because I had to really squeeze to lock it. Gave me lots of feathering even in slippery indoor parks and loose dirt.

Have either of those pads done much damage to your rim?

I'd say anything within the red-orange color spectrum will work well.

A buddy of mine ran clear Odyssey pads on his chrome rim, and boy did it eat those pads up! I soon got some orange ones that I ran for a while on my raw rim and they worked wonderfully. I only made the switch back to black Odyssey pads because it looked better on my setup, lol. They still work well, though.

I ran kool stop salmon on a chrome rear all summer, and no noticable wear on the rim. If that helps you decide.

you didnt notice any excessive wear on the pads at all? ive read a bit about how if they dont completely bust apart they like get kinda spotty (cant think of how to describe it) and wear apart fast

I ran clear on chrome and it was fine, doing fufuanus and even had em on the fronties for a couple months. The pads I had we already pretty shot and like 4 years old though.

BUT They didn't rip em apart because I never really feathered them, it was lock em up or don't use em. (stalls and skids).

They were loud though.

werddddd. maybe just all or nothin is the answer lol

i could see feathering causing them to break up and residue faster since they grip it so well

I'd say.. if you gotta bomb hills burn your shoe.. go clear for the ultra stop and learn some brake tricks!

I’ve been running clear pads (“disco” pads I get from EBay, not Odyssey etc) on my chrome 7kas for possibly the last 15 years. Rims are goooood, and have only very rarely had the pads come apart. I used to live in quite a hilly area and honestly the biggest issue was how loud they were bombing hills through town. I clean my rims with ammonia-free nail polish remover and that keeps them running fine (wish I had done this sooner as I changed my front rim a few years back thinking I wore the chrome out but it just needed cleaning with the right stuff/ needed that tweak some other bits to get my front brake working properly!).

Go chrome and clear. Fufanu everything.
