But clay would make the trails BETTER.
Seriously. Clay on top is prime. Use regular dirt to get it set up and dial in how you want your lines, then cover in clay and pack down well, then you have some SOLID trails.
I would build some trails and maybe build a mini (assuming you can swing it) and have it be intertwined with the trails, so hip in, alley oop air, hip out etc.
As to the quarter, depends on width. At 5 feet, I would say aim for 10-12 feet wide (or wider if you can afford it).
That would be roughly 10-12 feet of transition- so around 12-16 2x4s there, roughly 6-7 sheets of ply for the sides and transition, if you want a deck that would add around another 6-8 2x4s, plus supports underneath-maybe 3-5 2x4s. Can't forget the deck ply, so around another 2 sheets depending on if you want it 4 feet deep.
So all together:
about 8-10 sheets of ply (to leave extra for errors etc)
around 28-30 2x4s
A huge box of screws
Paint-regardless of green treatment, paint it. It customizes is, and protects.
Put the ramp on concrete footings if you can-it will last a LOT longer. If it sits on dirt in the weather, you will get maybe 3-5 years if you get a decent amount of rain where you are. If you are out in the desert, not as needed but still a good idea-at least to make it sturdy. I live in Minnesota and had one with non-treated wood last 11 years outside in the snow and rain and heat and humidity by putting it on concrete.
