Dirt riding & upkeep

depends on the type of dirt and weather n shit... ngl though, I just clean my bike and relube shit when it feels like it needs it. I know exactly how i like my bike to feel, so i can usually tell if somethings a bit rough and needs cleaning.
Still, you cant really over do it i guess, just gunna blast through your lube quicker than anal specific pornstars

I'd never ride in anything except clear skies, unless you get caught out of course. but especially dirt! plus the locals hate it if you ride the trails and they're wet.
my bike has currently more lube than Jenna Jameson's top draw.
which is also why dirt and shit sticks to it lol, funny, the more lube your holes up, the more shit sticks around. I should run female coaching seminars for un-lusty 40 something year old lonely women with large piles of self-help books and no answers.

When I rode dirt all the time, I would clean the driver maybe weekly, and overhaul the rest maybe monthly. SO many factors in when to do it though, weather, humidity, type of grease used, type of dirt, air quality, bailing a lot and so on.

I would say start with your rear hub, and try maybe weekly, and if it is bad, do it more often.

This right here. After riding awhile, you know exactly how you like your bike and can tell by feel when something needs to be examined, maintained and possibly replaced.

Yer I think I only dislike dirt cause I suck at it! and cause I suck at it I never do it so it becomes some weird self fulfilling prophecy I think lol
Which grease is best in your opinion?

I don't think im at any level wherein I can feel my bike deteriorating from under me.

I use park tool poly lube, and for the driver I mix in a little wet chain lube.

As to feeling it being different, unless you change your bike constantly, you will get used to how it feels and changes will be noticeable. Just takes a little time.

Thanks, I'll have to pick some up. the last time I went to the bike store they only had ceramic grease, which I figured was probably for ceramic bearings but was going to be better than no grease in the meantime.

that sounds about right. once the ride's dialled in, I won't be changing much!

i just use ATF (automatic transmission fluid)

precum is my go to luub

I clean mine off whenever I get bored and wanna clean it, usually at least once a month minimum. Taking things apart and cleaning everything happens at random though.. One week I'll get the urge to take my back wheel off and clean everything out, then the next week I'll get the urge to do my cranks/BB, then they're good for several weeks.


Riding dirt is rare for me, but if it happens I usually only clean my chain off then relube it if dirt's sticking to it real bad.


Other than that, unless I ride in really shitty weather, I don't clean mine out every other day.

There was a period of time where I rode dirt seven says a week a couple hours a day. It was more of a dry red dirt, some clay, but they had it so that when you packed the jumps, they were staying that way for a long time. It was dusty and the non jump parts were kinda chunky. From my experiences, I learned that if you're going to be riding lots of dirt, get a good chain, and the best sprocket you can buy. And clean your chain. I didn't for awhile. It killed my sprocket and chain way, waayyy to fast. And make sure you clean everything, hubs, headset if you're like me and are running an unsealed standard headset.
