Hi i have been riding a few months and wanna start riding pegs im just wondering do i really need to get hub guards or will i be alright without them?:D

When I see how scratches my guards are, I'm happy they are here, I also broke spokes pretty often, it would be worst without them.
If you had to buy ONE guard it´s the one who protect the driver, for anybody who grind on his drive side, whether if it´s the natural grind side or a guy who ride 4 pegs.

Guards have only really taken off in the past five or so years. Yeah glands are awesome and have been around forever, but most of the time we never used them, made you learn to grind better so you didnt end the session early.

Now days, you don't have huge dropouts to act as guards, so actual gaurds are sweet.

I much rather have a guard. keeps everything nice! The Less i have to worry the better

Honestly, you CAN ride without and grind without, BUT the consequence is that your spokes, lock nuts/cones and hub flange are wide open to get blasted by whatever you grind. That can mean broken spokes, trashed axle hardware and the worst of them all, trashed hub.

IF you ride nothing but mini ramp/halfpipe or stuff with ROUND COPING (think pipes on ledge corners), you can get away without better than someone who hits nothing but street.

But yea, get them. Your hubs/spokes will thank you with longer lasting life.

I ordered the wrong size ( one size fits most , didn't fit ) but my front hub only has minor spoke bendage and my back has just tiny scratches. I tend to pounce into my smiths and doubles pegs so my front wheel gets beaten but it's not horrible . I ride a guarded sprocket though .

1999 no guards and smooth and strong as the day it came out of george frenchs flat.

This.

So, you don't NEED to have them, but you should. I know from experience that grinding can cause damage to the hub shell and cone nuts, then cause them to rub against each other causing drag, and also for the rear hub whenever you slam down on them, you're hitting the hub shell right where the bearing sits and that's never good.

Plus grinds feel SO much smoother, especially with chromoly guards.

YES!!! If you love your spokes and hate taking off your wheel to fix your spokes... get some hub guards. Although... the primary function of a HUB guard, is to protect the hub. Your spokes run the risk of getting damaged as well. Fixing broken spokes is a pain in the ass... you have to take off the tire, tube, rim tape, un-thread the spoke, re-true the wheel, etc.

No hubguards for me I don't need em if you can't grind properly I would use them but if you have wide tires or can also already grind properly you won't need em

If you are a begginer in grinding, get hubguards. Even if you get good at it, and never touch the hubguard while grinding, keep them. You never know what can happen. Also a wise thing, try grinding on a friends bike, and see wich side you are confortable at. If you feel good grinding where you have your chain, you should switch the drive side, or get a very strong chain (strong and cheap:fly tractor).

guards are a must even if you ride stock spokes, I run 4 pegs and have guards on all 4 and even though I have 2.4" tires my spokes bend inward mainly cus the skatepark i ride at has square rails wich i hate so yea buy them i recomend the faily grind guards

|

10/17/2015 9:46 AM

Guards are totally not a must

|

10/17/2015 10:52 AM

If you actually grind a lot, guards might be a must. If you're just stalling coping or rarely grinding, they aren't. I don't care who you are, you're not gonna heavily grind a concrete ledge for 30 minutes without a hub guard and at the end of the sesh still have a completely flawless hub. And for sloppier grinders, the damage would be a lot worse.

so yeah if you're actually riding faster than .0003mph and grinding ledges, hub guards can most definitely be a must.

I'm just starting out too, just got a pair of odyssey mpegs ($16 for a pair) and grabbed some g sport glands for the front and back at only $10 dollars each. In my childlike excitement and intoxicant fueled gusto I slathered a rough ledge in the dark with a horrible hillbilly grassy weedy run up and huckhopped my way to my first three attempted peg excursions...They were not amazing as you can probably imagine but the third I was able to sketchily land both pegs; no slide to speak of but I was able to muscle back off the inclining 2 foot high ledge...I'm counting that as a win and I see myself and grinding having a tumultuous yet passionate love affair for years to come.

So if you wanna start grinding grab some odyssey mpegs for $16 for a pair, a pair of g sport glands for $20, and you're all set to get to grindin' for 40 bucks and at 34mm the mpegs have the same diameter as the fit og pegs....so you can slip wizard sleeves on em if you decide you wanna do the plastic thing.

Edit: went to the park today and double pegs are surprisingly easy atleast on flat low metal coping ledges but yes, get some hubguards I busted the zip ties off mine in the back but I'm super sketchy.

I think that just to be safe, why not. They are fairly inexpensive and it's way cheaper than having to fix spokes, replace axle hardware, and worse, your hub.

Yes you completely changed my mind, If it's important enough to bump a 3 year old thread for there must be some reason not to run them

As I progress and learn how to grind and hop on properly, I'm noticing fewer and fewer scratches on my hub guards and more and more concentrated wear on my pegs themselves (I measure this by rotating the hub guard any time I take off or tighten my wheel.)

So if you're just starting out, yes definitely get some. As you learn and start to be able to lock in just on pegs and balance properly, you'll probably need them less and less.

Your mileage might vary, but that's what I'm noticing. Plus, hub guards are a shitload cheaper than a new hub.
