Does anyone believe that bmx will ever be as big as skateboarding?

This thought has been floating around in my head for years, I'd love to see bmx be at the same level as skateboarding. I don't really believe or care that it ever will, but I do believe that I could be bigger than it is now. If you ask me, the fastest way bmx could become bigger, is if huge companies like vans, nike, and Etnies would make a bunch of signature shoes for bmx designed for and by bmxers like they've been doing for skateboarding.
-I wish nike 6.0 would have a comeback
-shout out to Etnies for making the number mids by Aaron Ross, and to lotek, and almond, for keeping it real.

If you think BMX needs to be bigger, you're part of the problem.

This. I'm tired of every few weeks a thread popping up on here about how BMX needs to be bigger like skateboarding or do this like skateboarding or do that like snowboarding. They are different sports, they work differently. Who cares if BMX gets more media coverage? Or if we have more people riding? I honestly think that all BMX needs to do is keep on chugging how it is.

Probably the major reason why BMX isn't as big is that a good bicycle costs around $1000 while a complete skateboard is around $200.

exactly, you can get a top of the line board/complete for $150, it's a cheap and fun

|

bmx being bigger = more money for companies because of a bigger demand
bmx being bigger also = more shit companies popping up to make shit parts for kids who want something cheap

I'm all for bmx companies profiting and growing, but I hate the fact that it'll be swagfag infested like skaters.

A "rapper" at my high school wore TONS of skater clothes (not to mention all the other regular guys who wore Vans "just because") and carried around a skateboard all the time. Bottom looked untouched and I don't think I ever even saw him ride it, he just liked the skater look. Which I think is gay as fuck, because bmx becoming as big as skateboarding will mean you'll see $2000 custom bikes being ridden to school by kids wearing all kinds of bmx clothing & apparel, and can barely ride the bike. Yes, their parent's money went to the companies at least, but it's dumb.

If they had a general interest that'd be one thing, even if they weren't that great at riding

|

2/8/2014 5:41 PM

No matter how much promotion bmx gets i think the cost of parts will always keep it from getting super huge.

|

2/8/2014 7:07 PM

I hope riding never gets big again. It was always more fun small.
I don't give a fuck about companies. The good ones will be there, and the shitty ones won't.

Where I am in the UK, BMX is more popular than skating.

To me BMX being popular doesn't matter, but what I don't want to happen is for it to actually be like the skating scene. They are two separate sports.

|

2/9/2014 4:23 AM

I hope it grows here in spain, because the scene is REALLY small. Theres like 17 riders in like 6 town, which population adeed is around 30000 people.

I love both, here in Puerto Rico neither is big and I end up skating or riding alone, but yea skateboarding is much cheaper, but BMX was my first love and ill pick it over skateboarding 9 times out of 10.

|

2/9/2014 9:36 AM

I think Skateboarding is more if a fad with kids than anything, that and they are a hell of alot cheaper than a bike would cost.

|

2/9/2014 10:46 AM

I would like BMX to get the POSITIVE coverage skateboarding does, as that means more legal spots to ride.

But outside of that, it is fine where it is, I would like more money to come in for the companies trying to make good parts and innovating things. I am getting tired of some of those "cookie-cutter" companies dropping the same crap for everyone.

Bmx is fine. I want more people to know what it is and want to ride but not actually do it. Why? Then people would think bmx was cool and more positives would be associated with it and people already think we ride fucking spraypainted walmart bikes.

I said this before, but i have come to these conclusions.

1.) BMX Is more dangerous. Most moms see kids on BMX bikes beating people up in movies, which makes them believe if a kid rides a bike he automatically does drugs and beats up kids. They see things that really look dangerous (that arent really that bad) like a 360 or a tailwhip and it is visually frightening to see a bike ridden in such a way. Skating is much less terrifying to see.

2.) Skating is dirt cheap, let's be honest. In comparison to BMX of course. a GOOD bike is at very least 400. A good board is maybe 100-200$. Unless you snap boards constantly you arent spending much at all.

3.) BMX Bikes are cumbersome to transport. You have to have an SUV/Hatchback/etc. to get a bike in without taking it apart or having to pull out racks for the back or roof. Moms/Dads dont wanna lug the bikes around when you can pop 50 skateboards into a Nissan Micro. haha

4.) BMX is hard. Scooting is easy, the basic skating really isnt as hard as BMX. You can learn to Ollie in a day when learning to bunny hop can take weeks. (this is on average, an ollie is easier than a Bunny Hop)

There are a lot more reasons but i really wish people saw what we saw. BMX is better, more fun (when done right), and safer i believe.

The thing is, BMX is not AS popular for just those reasons. The question is, why would you want BMX more popular?? Girls liking guys that did it? For it to be looked upon more fondly? It wont be, sadly. Not for a little while or until MTV makes a show about it (LOL). BMX comes in fads and things like that. You cant do anything about it. In the 80s, HUGE, in the 90s Mat Hoffman!!, in the early 2000s, dead!!, now, on the rise, i believe. It is on it's way to being popular in the USA. YOU have to help it, by setting a good example. We all do.

Personally, i have moved on from wanting it to be popular. I think if i ever make it to being a big rider i will do what i can to make it looked upon better, like Nigel Sylvester kind of. haha sadly, people are still racist so lots of people turn away right when they see the color of him.

Max I don't wanna quote your post, but you son't need a station wagon or racks. I have a 2 door Mazda MX6 that I can fit my bike into super easily. I put one back seat down for my back wheel to slide in and the rest fits in my trunk. My homie has a Chevy Cavalier and keeps his bike in his back seat haha. The other advantage of a bike vs a skateboard is you can ride your bike places easier than skate places, making the worry about cars somewhat less.

No it wont. Its an expensive sport for this bad economy that we are in.. I dont care if its a big sport or small sport. As long as i ride.

|

2/9/2014 8:43 PM

dunno, don't really care but i wish the image of bmx was a little better. hate being seen as a druggie/thug/mugger/yakuza/motorcycle gang member (I'm riding a BI-CY-CLE ffs) or just an overall lowlife. dunno where people get those crazy ideas from. its a sport that takes dedication god dammit

It's definitely not gonna get any bigger with companies like DC dropping their BMX team.

^Teams dropping has nothing to do with the fact that bmx is bigger or smaller. Here in spain people didnt even know that dc had bmx team, most people probably doesnt know that they have a skate team also.
I want to make my local scene bigger, but it just seems impossible.

I think bmx is fine the way it is, itd be weird if it was super main stream. I really dislike nigel sylvester. Hes a pretty good rider, but i feel like all he cares about it pushing bmx into mainstream things and making moves with big companies (gatorade, nike, gshock, etc). dont know if im the only one who feels that way about him but thats just my opinion.

Nah I feel the same way about Nigel Sylvester, I really like his riding, its smooth as fuck , but the way he goes about trying to get bmx into the mainstream doesn't sit well with me, its seems more like self promotion disguised as good intent for the sport, just doesn't seem genuine.

I know a bunch of kids (around 14ish) who got their parents to buy them 1200$ bikes.. Theyll ride them twice then realize they dont like it or its too hard..... and buy a scooter.
