So my friend has been using my old ezra opus wheel but lately the hub will randomly stop engaging. I opened it up and everything looked fine so i cleaned it out and regreased it and the same thing happened in an hour. It's not just skipping it is completely stopping engagent and feels like the bike has no chain. Any ideas what it is?

Is it a wraparound spring design?

I'm betting it needs a new spring if that's the case, hubs that use that design can develop that problem overtime. I've seen & worked on hubs like that and a new spring solved the problem.

Try finding a replacement spring

And try pressing down on the pawls, they should give a nice firm spring back when you let go. If they're not springing back like that then that confirms it cause that means the spring isn't doing its job

That hub just does that as soon as it gets old. Dont try to bend the spring, it'll fuck it worse, trust me. The pawls will just quit in one spot. You could use like a rubberband actually, i did and it worked pretty well but they tend to mess up after a bit.

If you have like some sort of old spring toy, those work. Not like a wind up toy, but like something else. I forget what it was i used.
