Female Axle Conversion

Got a mission wheelset, echo FW and react RW.

I know the react hub has a conversion kit, and after reading a few posts about it, im wondering if my echo front wheel has a conversion kit of its own. I don't mean a kit specifically made for it. Because I saw people used profile conversion kits on colony hubs and such, I was wondering if that might work on my hub. Or if it only works on FWs with 14mm male axles. Currently running a male 3/8s axle, nothings wrong with it, I don't need fast feedback. Just very very very curious as to if I could run a female on front.

And don't comment about having a company machine a female axle for me. I know that's an option. Tell me if there are any conversion kits that might fit my hub currently. But again if you do know companys willing to machine an axle for me, for cheap, id love to have the option.

It wouldn't work for your front wheel as the middle of your bearing will be for a 3/8" axle and to have a female axle the bolts would have to be very small and therefore very weak.

Thats what i thought. Wasnt sure if i could get different bearings or something like that. I mean technically if i get bearings with a 15mm openning. I can get an axle off albes, and drill a hole and thread it. Make it a female. But thats only if i have no other options. Im only trying to figure this out cause stock is a goddamn hollow 3/8 piece of shit.

If you got bearings with a 15mm inner diameter with the outer diameter of the bearings for your hub then the bearings will be extremely weak. Your axle should be fine.

This is your best bet, and really cost effective.

Well i mean, ill just get stronger bearings. So get this, i buy bearings from dans.

15x26x8 bearings

14mm axle
http://www.albes.com/14mmreplacementaxles.aspx

and i can pickup cones/nuts at my local bike shop. In all nearly $50 or so dollars. As much as id love to have a project like this. I could just buy a new front hub for a bit more. So youre right, if i snap the axle ill just buy a new hub. Still would be cool as all hell to mod my own hub yaknow?

A guy I know got a 14mm front and lobbed it short, tapped the hollow axle and MADE it a female for his kid.

You may have seen the kid on the lil pros tour in Cali, Dallas Light. He used to live a block up the street from me. Not sure if he is still using the hub though.

won't be that simple, you need a bearing with a 15mm ID, 26mm OD, & 8mm Width. Quick google search shows me this is the closest I could find, 1mm off would mean you'd probably need a spacer behind the locknuts on your hub for it to not rub. I'd bet they make the correct size, I just don't feel like looking

And on top of that, you'd need a center axle that fits bearing to bearing. There's little shoulders on the axle in the inside of the hub, you can see it in the link you listed for axles. Finding the correct size MIGHT be an issue, but if you can then all you'd need to do is figure out how much you need to cut off, cut it, smooth it down, then drill & thread it for a 3/8"x24tpi axle bolt.

Don't forget you'll also need locknuts on it which could be hard to find since it obviously wouldn't be specific to the hub, something like these Profile jam nuts might work, but you'll need 2 on both sizes most likely. Then, 3/8" bolts, and it should all work out.

BUT, all that would come out to nearly $80 so you'd be better off just buying a new front hub than wasting all that cash. If you had all these things laying around, it wouldn't be a bad idea. I had all these things laying around but with a different axle system & converted my oldd Odyssey 14mm male front hub to female easily. You can see it here

I already found the 15x26x8 bearing. Center axle I could buy from albes. You can choose your size from albes, its really easy. I can just measure the axle on my hub currently. also locknuts and such, my bike shop has. I called them yesterday. But all in all as I stated before and as you just did. Yes, this would be far too expensive to be worth it in the end, and im better off buying a new hub. Was mostly just interested incase I snap the axle soon, seeing as its 3/8s and hollow.

I do appreciate your response though, if I do ever plan on femaling my own axle, ill be sure to go back on your post. That's very interesting and helpful. Thanks.

Ill forsure try to female my back hub, if I fuck it up, i can always buy the conversion kit from odyssey for a mere $35.
