Just wondering, I have standard open-ended dropouts on my bike, but would I still be able to use female hubs, just not vice-versa?

Perfectly fine it might be a bit confusing with the introduction of "Shemale" hubs.

3/8ths Drop Outs (Usually Forks) will need 3/8ths bolts.
14mm Drop Outs (Usually Frames) will need 14mm bolts

You can use 3/8ths female axle'd hubs in 14mm drop outs but you will need axle adapters.

Shemale cassette hubs.. They have a male axle that goes into the drop outs but is cut off at the end & threaded for female bolts. You will need to use 3/8ths pegs with one of these hubs.

Examples.

G-Sport Marmoset Front Hub is a 3/8ths Female Hub
Shadow BTR Cassette Hub is a True 14mm Female Cassette
Eclat Dynamic "Female" Cassette Hub is a "Shemale" Axle will use 3/8ths Female Bolts but will work fine in 14mm drop outs.
Profile Mini Cassette with a Race Axle is a 3/8ths Female Cassette so you will need Axle Adapters to run it in 14mm Drop Outs

Hope that helps & isn't too confusing.

Normal drops you can run male and female axles depending on drop out size

Closed drop outs will need female axles
