I wanna build better wheels in the future and I wanted to get Birdcages for both wheels
I've been checking old threads to get as much opinions as I can
but I've seen a few negative opinions about them so I'm wondering about getting 7KA (rear) and Hazard (front)

and let's just say I don't want any other brands atm

what should I do?

I cracked my first set of Birdcages riding alot of unsmooth street. My 2nd set from warranty is doing great after two months.

If i was going to buck and up and spend cash again, i would do

Birdcage(Front), Rib or Rollcage(Rear)

Odyssey Aerospace(Front), 7KA(Rear)

Ribcages are by far the strongest rim on the market.

My understanding is the hazards and 7ks have equal strength. Only difference is weight. This is because the hazards are 6061 "triple wall" (2.5 wall tbh) and 7ks are 7075 (stronger) double wall. So personally, a haz front 7k rear sounds ideal because imo bikes with equal weight on each side ride so much better.
As for bird cages, I don't trust them solely because they don't weigh shit which sketches me out.

7075 is like 50% stronger than 6061... plus the 7K is 17 ounces and the Hazard lite is like 17.6 ounces... not too much of a difference. The 7K is quite a bit stronger but still lighter. The 7K probably has the best strength/weight ratio of any rim. But the Ribcage is the strongest rim overall.

^I want to see 7075 Hazards! I'd buy that crap up quick! I'm with Hard on balanced weight too. I've ridden an uneven setup where the front was too light compared to rear, feels shit at times.

I've got Hazard Lite up front and 48h Rib in the rear, lovin it. Haz front and 7k rear would be great. Or even two 7ks/Ribs would be solid. Birdcages are overrated imo, I'd never run em.

What hub do you have? If you're running a 48h ratchet I think we can work something out

I could snag up the 48 for maybe 30-40. I was gonna buy you a brand new 36h 7ka and lace it to my primo for your hub if it was a ratchet loo

yeah I think I'll stick to the idea of having Hazard in front and 7KA in the rear

|

11/22/2013 3:24 PM

my friend has a hazard , its really strong but he finds he needs to true his wheel often

|

11/22/2013 3:28 PM

hey dude I had this exact setup : 48h 7ka rear and 36h hazard front

The 7ka in 48 is kind of bombproof and hazard in front is very reliable and dont need much truing

Ribcage > 7KA > Hazard Lite > Rollcage > Birdcage

The Birdcage is an aero rim and is recommended for the front though some light riders run it both front and rear. As for Ribcage's, they're basically Rollcage's but a stronger version. With 7KA's and Hazard Lite's, they're both super strong but the 7KA has a stronger material and is lighter, which is the closest in comparison to the Ribcage. If you on budget but need super good street rims, go both Rollcages, both Hazard Lites, or Rollcage in the rear with Birdcage in the front like most people who run Gsport rims.

You're right 7075 is about 50% stronger than 6061. But the 7KA is made of 7005 Aluminium, which is only about 10-15% stronger.

same problem here, im running a hazard in the rear and it is insane how much that thing needs to be trued. i did have dans lace it (which you should never. ever. ever. do) so that might also be a contributing factor.

You obviously don't know the first thing about lacing a wheel. After you ride a freshly laced wheel, the spokes stretch out causing them to be loose. Doesnt matter who or where laces it, it will be the case every time.
Ill put money on it that you either didn't tighten them or you tightened them wrong after they stretched.
Therefor your argument is invalid.

Shit man right now I'm riding the same exact rims just that my rear rib is 36h.
I got this Hazard Lite for cheap and was supposed to be a provisory substitute for the Birdcage I sold but is actually holding up really good.
Yet don't know what to do.
I kind of want my old front wheel back (still have another Ribcage in Italy) so I'd rather sell my front wheel as a whole and get another GSport, Simian possibly?

But yes my wet dream has always been having 7KAs.

Birdcage if you only ride like park or flowy trails and are concerned on weight. If your on a budget get Hazards. If money is no obstacle then get 7ka's
