I thought the Ratchet 2 was going to be called a Simian aswell?! Oh well i'm not particularly bothered i just want to know if they've changed the driver to a 4 Pawl or maybe even the 6 pawl they tested a few years back! The only downside to the Ratchet Hub is the shitty engaging Driver. I hope they have resolved this issue. If they have, i may just have to purchase these for the Benny instead of the Tree Hubs i had planned to get after the Raider is built!

Just looked now and OTX (the people that design Odyssey, GSport, Sunday and fairdale products) have just commented calling it a Simian

Aaaaaah, there we go then. Thought so! As i mentioned, Hopefully they have sorted out the crappy Engaging Driver & if so i will be running Simians laced to Birdcages with HGS Spokes & Taper Hex Nipples!

|

8/16/2013 10:23 AM

It's not the pawls causing shitty engagement. It's the drive ring. It's not regular teeth but rather huge square gaps. If you want it switcheable then deal with the basically slack in it

|

I'm on the vital legit list!

8/16/2013 10:40 AM

I couldn't care less about it being switchable Tom! I run RHD & i always will. I know they wont be dropping that idea anytime soon though. It makes "business" Sense & all that marketing bollocks. You don't need to make LHD & RHD Hubs because you can just flip the Driver woo-hoo. Like what happened when removable mounts were introduced pretty much killed off Welded Mount & Brakeless Frames & the majority of people know Removable Mounts are shit compared to Welded Mounts when it comes to Brake Power & for the guys who don't run Brakes at all, the majority of Removable Mounts look fucking hideous on some Frames!

Anyway sorry for the bitch lol... Back to the Hub laughing

|

8/16/2013 10:43 AM

haha as a switchable hub is cool i think that it will just be a pain. i mean who thinks one night "Fuck it LHD tomorrow" People have a preference and will tend to stick to it

Exactly! I can Guarantee you a shop has 20 Ratchets in stock. 10 are LHD & 10 are RHD, OK if they sell the 10 LHDs & someone orders a LHD they can easily just switch the Driver over. But as you said, who the Fuck switches back & forth?!

and not only would you need interchangeable hubs but cranks too. and those fuckers are expensive.

I've swapped back and forth a few times on my ratchet but always tend to go back to lhd

|

I'm a punk bmxer, I can't do it well so I do it loud.

8/16/2013 11:29 AM

I always thought itd be fun to switch it to LHD but not put it on the left and have it so you can pedal backwards and go backwards XD itd make you look like either the king of fakies, or the biggest douche ever. Id do it just to see if id get better at fakies lol

This. I'm not paying $200 for a hub that has an option I'm never gonna use. Woohoo 20mm axle. 14mm works just fine for me. The bonedeth team are the only guys I can think of that would need that strength and even they don't use it. And that slack...My mission react cassette engaged, rolled, and felt better than the damn ratchet. Fucking ay my coaster feels better and they have basically the worst engagement system ever

Haha, actually, I have decided just that before. My cranks are switchable, my hub is switchable, so why not? I didn't keep it that way though. It was more for the novelty, and to make kids scratch their head, haha.

Having a switchable hub makes it easier to re-sell the hub to people/friends.

And wouldn't it be a pain in the ass for small bike shops to stock LHD/RHD specific hubs that they might not sell at all?

The simian looks very interesting right now.... but i just got the Daily Grind hub... it's making me a sad panda sad

Bros, the ratchet was never meant to have quick engagement. Its a street hub, for us street guys we need that extra slack for backwards landing we get a little extra time to pedal, it also has a barrage of other benefits. I mean, one hub is obviously not gonna be for everybody. The hub is meant to last (or try to) last forever, hubs with quicker engagement tends to wear down faster, I heard that premium stinger only lasted a month! The slack is because of the bigger teeth and thus bigger gaps in engagement. If you no like, then you no buy, everybodys happy!?

|

Maybe you should consider being considerate?

Yeah thays how people are here. They like to sit on here and argue about the performance of a part like the company is gonna change the product if they can prove to a random guy that their points are valid. Whatever though this is their life. Mines is on my bike using my parts rather thsn them sitting in a basement being polished and petted all day and night and any time im not on vital ranting about the performance of parts im not forced to buy.

I do both.

Ride the parts, then polish them.

Ratchet engagement kinda blows. I dont like super high engagement but I prefer that of a Primo/Cult cassette. I haven't had a problem with the Ratchets engagement, I just find using pedal pressure in fakies a bit tricky with it.

As for people bashing switch drive hubs, it does alot of good. Examples...
If a shop has 10 RHD and 10 LHD available and 15 people want to buy RHDs and 5 want to buy LHDs, they just missed out on 10 potential sales AND have extra hubs laying around that nobody wants because the side drive it has.

The company might spend more having to make two different ratchet rings/pawls.

You can switch your drive train to learn oppo grinds/sprocket stalls.

When you are finished with the hub, you can resell it to anyone. Where if I have an LHD hub, RHD-only riders wont want to buy it.

If you have RHD specific cranks but run LHD via SD sprocket and you break the SD sprocket, you can throw an old BD sprocket on and run RHD until you can get a new SD.

And as mentioned above, if my cranks have the option, why not my hub? I see absolutely no disadvantages to switch drive hubs given that they use a proper design (I always blew out the retaining rings on my Eastern Birectional drivers.)
