Grease?

What grease should I be using on my chain? I used WD-40 and it made it full of black gunk all over the chain and the driver. I cleaned it all out and I used Weldtite Cycle Oil on it and it had the same results.

I just got a can of Holts Spray Grease

Description :

Lubricates and Protects every part. Non drip - High cling. High temperature. High pressure. Anti rust. Drives out water. Powerful direct spray

Is it worth my time cleaning my chain and driver out and putting this stuff on or will I be wasting my time?

A good chain lube, only use wd40 if your cleaning your chain.

|

2/2/2015 12:18 PM

I wouldn't use grease on a chain, as you said it will get gunked up.

I use the wax-type grease. It's awesome and also prevents against corrosion. I think they sell it on dans for like 5 dollars

Do NOT ever use WD40 for lubing your chain, cleaning is okay, but WD40 is not for lubing your chain adequately. You might as well be rubbing your ball sweat on your chain if you're doing that.

Also do NOT EVER grease your chain, use fine lubes. See if you can find 3 in 1 oil at a store near you, I use that as an alternative when I don't have White Lightning chain lube at the moment.

As for grease, you can use that grease for whatever else you want as long as it's not for your chain, such as greasing your bearings, bearing seats, driver, etc.

WD-40 is a lubricant, people have been using it for years on chains

Don't use wd40 for anything on your bike it's not a lubricant its a de greaser

And don't waste your money on grease/lube from some bike shop or dans comp
You can go to an automotive store and buy a giant can of the exact same grease/lube that will last you a lifetime for your bike for the same price for some tiny pack of grease/lube you'd buy at a bike shop

If WD40 is a lubricant, then go ahead and clean out all your bearings & driver and replace the grease with WD40 and see how well that turns out.

There are specific types of WD40 you can use as lubes, but the traditional kind most everyone is used to, is not practical for lubing stuff up, especially chains.

Says right on the can of wd40 removes moisture

Drying your chain up is not lubricating it

WD-40 is not a grease, it's a lubricant
You lube/oil your chain and grease your bearings, hence why you wouldn't put WD in your bearings.

You still can put oils/lubes in your driver/bearings. Lots of people do it and finer lubes/oils work much better in drivers than a glob of grease. If WD40 WAS a lubricant, then by your logic it would work just the same in the driver as it would on a chain.

But not being a lubricant, it won't. Which was the point I was trying to make, I guess I could've worded my last post a little better.

WD-40 is not nearly as good a lube as anything else you could use, theres many many other lubes out there that are better, WD-40 as a lubricant is better suited to door hinges and the like.

Weldtite Cycle Oil looks like its about the same as White lightning. So you prolly need to reclean everything with Wd-40 or some kind of de greaser since black gunk is still coming out..(I used wd-40,worked great with a wirebrush) . Ive read that 50/50 gas/diesel works the best and cheapest way to clean your chain but I had wd-40 and it worked fine. One bike I bought used was greased and it worked but like others say it was gunked up and it ruined a few pairs of jeans and i had a grease tattoo of a chain and sprocket for 3 weeks on leg. So clean the chain until no more black gunk it present with wd-40, then relube with your Cycle oil. Or buy a new chain.

Don't use WD-40 for anything on your bike!!!
They have chain specific oil that you can buy from you local bike shop or maybe even Wal-Mart.
I would soak your chain in Coca-Cola (yeah, seriously) to get that shit off and then lubricate it with some KY Jelly.

At the end of the day you could use cooking oil, anything that will cling to and protect metal from corrosion will work

Engine oil, Gt85, chain wax, spray grease (e.g lithium grease), the list is massive but it's only a singles speed bmx chain. Bottom line is don't use Wd40 or any hydraulic oils.

I take my chain off and wash it in a bag of white spirit a few times, let it dry and result it occasionally, I've used loads of shit and my chain still looks brand new and ice never snapped one.
