Gum is a softer material, so theoretically gum should grip better. I suppose gum would also wear faster, but I dont think it would be by much considering alot people have run gum Cult Deharts for a good amount of time.
For looks, I think you should get more gum/gum colored parts to pull it off. Gum grips are easy to come by, theres also a few gum-colored seats im pretty sure. I think that would do it, and gum usually doesn't look bad with bits of red (dust caps, hubs, bolts, bar ends, etc.)

Gum with black wall. I have a red and black bike and my front tire (dehart gum with black wall) looks pretty good. I just have to spray paint my seatpost black to make it look awesome.
