is it really worth it for me to invest in a steel hub guard, ive been running this fbm one forever and it seems to do the trick, i ride plastic sleeves on my pegs and a lot of street ledges and rails and i was recently told it would completely change my ice picks and feebles etc. reguarding how well it slides

It will drastically improve the smoothness of your grinds, and for me it helps lock into the grind a lot better.

I've ridden aluminum guards front & back, then switched to chromoly and I'll never go back. Grinds are much smoother, and the way the S&M Cymbal guard is designed, you don't slam onto the hub guard & drag on it for a second, then go to the peg when grinding. Your guard will hit the ledge/rail, and immediately send you on your pegs giving less grind resistance.

Also, idk if it's just me but sometimes when locking into rails with aluminum guards, they kinda stuck & made it hard to balance sometimes, once I switched to chromoly it made that so much easier.

Another good part is how long they last. I had the FBM guard less than a year, actually I had two of them, both just under a year, and destroyed the axle hole on the one, and destroyed the other one to the point where it would rub spokes. My S&M guard that I've been running for 2 years now would look brand new if I put a coat of paint on it, aside from one little area. I grind A LOT too.

10/10 worth it if you don't mind a little extra weight/spending cash.

No idea. I don't see the need. I run aluminum guards up front and plastic in the rear and have no issues

guards are for pussies.

Ehhh not really. I mean I don't give a shit about how my hubs look, some people only run guards so their hubs don't get all scratched up, but that's pussy shit in my opinion.

Grinding without a guard in the rear can easily damage your non-drive side bearings overtime since each time you hit your hub first, all that pressure is going right to your hub shell, that has a bearing right underneath it. And two friends of mine have cracked their flanges without guards, and I know some people will say "Well then just land all on your peg", well, sometimes you can't, and overtime that takes a toll.

Now in the front, I only really run one up there to make grinds smoother. I used to never run guards in the front, just laced my spokes all inside the hub shell on that side, but it had TERRIBLE grind drag for me.

lol that was quick. I post this everytime somebody asks about guards... I cant get my frame stretched enough in back to run guards back there and I dont really like the guards for the demo hub up front so i just dont use them... I do not understand what you are saying though? The pressure on the bearing would come from the peg hitting... a guard wont stop that pressure. and hitting the guard will likely transfer through too. Only reason for guards seems to be protect the actual flanges of the hub and the spokes. Maybe i'm just misunderstanding?

If you hop onto a rail, and are too far over, you can hit your hub shell on that side easily before it kicks you over to your peg. Does that make sense? It never really happened to me often, but I know sometimes I'd hit a rail really sloppy when I didn't use a hub guard and I could see my hub shell sliding on the rail, indicating that I got on weird & slammed that spot instead & of my pegs by accident.

I have no idea if that made sense, but I know it's happened to me more than once & can damage your bearings because I can tell a significant difference between bearings on that side that were used with & without guards
