So the other day my friend sold me a sprocket for 10 bucks cuz he didn't need it and had no idea how to get it off. I thought it would be pretty easy(i was completely wrong) and my old one got bent up pretty bad. He just gave the thing to me like this:

So now I have no idea how to get it off, and no bike until I do. My cranks are a 3 piece sealed. My friend said he got it from an unsealed frame so I think this would be called a 3 piece unsealed. idk. (I have no experience other than 3 piece unsealed) but i was just gonna drill a hole in it to attach it. I've only found one other topic about this and there really was no help cuz the poster didn't have any pictures. Any idea?

see that piece behind the sprocket? see the little grooves in it? take a flathead screwdriver or a punch/chisel or something and get the flat end inside one of those grooves and tap it down to loosen it, then just unscrew it and the sprocket will slide off

sundaybmxrr: I tried that dude. It won't budge. I also tried unscrewing it with like these giant pliers. and with a vice grip. See in like the first picture, there's like that silver thing with the lipped edge? I think that thing unscrews and is totally separate from the thing with the notches. I think i need a way to get that silver thing off first and then unscrew the thing with the notches. I could be totally wrong too. Thats just what my guess is.

no it's all one piece. spray some WD40 on it so it gets down into the threads, let it sit for a few minutes then try again. Also makes sure you're going the right way, counterclockwise to loosen it

sundaybmxrr: K. thanks man. I'll try that. If not then i'll just take it to my bike shop.

Take a hammer and start smacking it. maybe it will come off.

Yeah, i'd go what sunday said also. I've never seen a spindle like that with the threads on it. Might be stuck on there forever. What kind of cranks did that spindle come on?

I put some wd-40 on and and turned it clockwise and counter clock wise if your looking at it from the inside (I wasn't sure what side you were looking at it from) and it wouldn't budge. so then i put my pedals on like in the pics, had my dad stand on them for pressure, and pushed down. still nothing. and i also tried it the other way around just in case that worked. Nothin. So idk. Photo

Also to the troll guy, I tried that too. I heard about it from some other thread and he was completely serious. still didn't work. so yeah

do you have a vice or something like that?

I'd say clamp the piece you're trying to get off in it and crank the crank itself to break it loose

|

5/26/2013 8:50 PM

I got nothin man. The closest thing I have is the vice grip in the pics and I tried it with that. No dice. I feel like I'm missing something obvious. IDK. have you ever had a problem like this?

|

5/26/2013 9:23 PM

yeah on Saturday I took apart an old crankset at work at the bike shop that needs the sprocket taken off it and ran into this exact problem, that nut is really on there, just as it seems to be really on yours.

keep spraying some WD40 on the threads where the nut is and try clamping the entire nut with the vice grips you have, instead of just that one area, have your dad stand on the pedal again and this time you stomp on the vice grip and see if that budges it.

and you should be going lefty loosey if you're looking at it like this

the piece behind the sprocket is reverse threaded. and a hammer and flathead remove it alot better than vice grips. they come off with a tad bit of muscle. and put a crank arm on the spindle as like a stopper so the spindle doesnt move as you try to loosen

I'm on the vital legit list!

i had two like this. just go at it with the hammer and screw driver or if you give up just run at it with a grinder hahah (nah place the grinder on it lightly and the vibration should loosen it up then you should be able to knock it off with the screw driver

You need this tool. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B002PTVDP0
Without it you're just going to damage the lockring further. Take it to your LBS along with a 6-pack and presto! it'll be off in two minutes
